I have an 83 200 big red shaft drive. it does not have a clutch . my question is how do you shift into reverse and did they ever make a big red with only 4 gears ? (or is my 5th gear broke)
thanks for any info .

I think the only 200cc BR's that were shaftys were the 84's....??? MY 85 BR there is a button on the rear brake lever that you push down, pull the lever and push the shifter down once from neutral... Not sure on the 200's....

they are only 4 speeds (i know its slow) and if yours is in fact a chain driven big red then it will not have reverse, have you found the high and low lever? the reverse is on that fr the 84

yup I see the lever that says H-L-R . but it dosent go into low or reverse . it is defenetly shaft driven. and I could be mistaken about the year. I was mainly wondering if it had 4 or 5 gears.
thanks for the info.

you should probably check the sub tranny to see if any gears are stuck. Shaft drive was 84.

on my big red it has to be in neutral and you have to rock it back and forth to get it there, if not you might have to pull apaprt your high low gear box

Well as stated above, the 83's didnt come with reverse. The 84 200es had the high and low tranny with reverse. On the left side of the case is a shifter to change from high to low, there is also a place to put it in reverse. There should be a white dial to show its in Reverse. You must shift in reverse when the trike is in neutral.
Sorry this is the only pic I have of one before I restored it.

ok so It it a 5 speed ? none of the shaft drives were 4 speeds ?
I have tried to move the H-L-R and it was stuck I freed it up but there's still nothing other then H gear. so I guess ill have to look into that .
I'm not able to rock it back n forth just yet I'm waiting on my back tires for that. its up on blocks and it shifts only 4 times.

I don't think you have any problems with your trany, Your big red has a 5 speed shaft drive . It will need to be in running condition with the tires in it to tell if you have any trany problems.I have a 1984 200es big red and I had to put it in 1st gear and then pull back the reverse lever in order for it to engage in reverse sometimes, while it was runnung. you will "not" be able to shift all the gears until you are in moving motion or have all the tires on it and rock it back and forth.

If it's up on blocks, just grab the rear axle and roll it back and forth. The range gearbox isn't synchronized, so you have to get the gears to line up in order to make it switch ranges.

and it has 4 gears that actually move it, 5 speed including neutral, sounds to me like it may need the gear box taken apart, inspected then reassembled according to the service manual
