I live in ohio, called the title office and they said to send them all the info i had and they would help if they could, if they couldnt i'd be getting a letter for a court date,Yikes! Anyone know how i can get my titles easily? Thanks Dave

A court date? What for, to show you are the owner? First thing I would assume would be running the vin to see if it has been stolen. If you could find the last titled owner you could contact them and see if they have the title to sign over to you. But that could blow up in your face if they say it was stolen but not reported. What is the statute of limitations on grand theft? If it was never titled I would assume you would just sign up for a title. But I wonder if they could hit you up for back taxes?
Just a thought..

COURT????? I thought Jersey was bad. I guess if they run the vin and it's hot they need someone to charge. I hope you know the background on your bikes wouldn't want to see you lose them.

In Michigan when I buy a three wheeler, I get a bill of sale from the seller with the VIN number, the date I purchased it, and the cost. I then take it to the Sec. of States office and apply for a title. Takes a couple of days as they run the VIN to see if it has been stolen. I haven't had any problems getting titles so far. In Michigan back in the day when you could buy three wheelers new from dealers they did not issue titles.

in texas, ownership is 9/10s of the law. if they show it was not registured for the last 10 years, it's considered abonded and they whipe it. even if it was stole you can registure and title it as your own after 10 years.
i love texas.

i just called the DCNR in PA this week about getting a title a 4wheeler i bought. they ran the vin for me and it was not stolen but had been thru a bunch of unknown owners since 2000 was it wsa titled last. they send out a notice to the last person in record asking for them to sign the title over to me, if they dont respond in 3 weeks, all i gotta do is write a bill of sale to show some type of proof i bought it. then i can print out an application and sent it and and get my title and or register it.
to get where i got i 1st called a local title and register place then they hooked me up with the info to the state and they helped me form there out. try what i did 1st, maybe it will get ya the same results!

In Florida you need:
A competent DMV counter worker (this is, by leaps and bounds the hardest part of the procedure) because they will argue with you till the sun sets about how you need an MCO or an old title signed over (These aint boats or cars lady, this state didn't issue titles until about 6 years ago!). Arm yourself with a print off from your states DMV office specifying exactly what it is your trying to tell them, and they will still argue with your 3/4 of the time.
A bill of sale with the make, model, serial #, date, and purchase price. As well as the buyer and sellers names.
Then if your bill of sale has the date on it newer than 2002, they charge you sales tax on it, which really sucks, but its the government so what else can you expect from them.
They will then issue a title on the spot there for you and print stickers out. Your paper copy of the title will come in the mail to you a few weeks later.
Really, getting past step #1 is the hardest part. After that it is easy.

Texas is good until you have to file for title for a boat that no on can find the last owner who had it registered. I sold my last jet ski cause i had to go through too many hoops to get a title for it.. in the End i just said forget it.

I know this is a old post I just called Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to have my 85 tecate titled and I asked what was the first year a trike was titled in pa it was 1987 but there was no trikes in 87 so it most likely quads where the first titled in pa.
but you had the option to have it done through the dmv back then if was not then you have a clear bike they have no info on it. I need to get my trike titled a bunch of bikes were stolen around here lately if you have no title the cops wont do anything.

In PA who do i call to see if mine was stolen? I bought it on eBay from a guy in Ohio and the guy seemed kinda creepy an misleading but we took it anyways and gave them the money.

ohio sucks indeed....im going through the same thing....ohio changed their law in 1999. now all atv's(atc) need to be titled...even with my bill of sale i was told i bought my trike illegally....you can not buy or sell a untitled atv in ohio....i was told the same thing...send in my info...and they will give me a letter to go to common pleas court where the judge will decide if i get a title or not (or if its state property and i lose out)....the lady at the title bureau ran my vin and it came back clean and as never being titled......i bought a new frame with a title out of california.....waiting for the signed title Ohio sucks!

Just titled 2 quads and my big red in Pa. If its never been titled just do a vin rub and have a bill of sale. You will get a plate and temp sticker right then.

Whats a "vin rub"
Get a pencil and paper and put the paper on the vin number use the pencil and rub over the vin.

In NY, I just registered 3, 3 wheelers last year. I tool a pencil rub of the VIN, and filled out a claim of ownership form. After it clears in Albany, I got transferable registrations (another form of a title). In the mean time they give you temp registration.
Just make sure they aint stolen before doing this. And there may be a statue of limitations. I had trouble registering a bike I already owned, cause I hadn't registered it in so long. They wanted to see the title again, even though I owned it and brought in a pencil rub of the vin, and had insurance for it, and the old plate.

Where can i look to see if its stolen with out bringing attention to myself if it is? And what would happen if it does come back stolen and they cant figure out who i am? Sorry about hijacking thread.
just call the local police auto-desk, and ask them to verify a bike you were looking at to be not stolen

Who was that guy a couple weeks ago, bought a spiffy sx or something and upon papertrailing it, cops said it was reported stolen 20 some years ago and they TOOK it from him.
I see 'em and maybe buy them and then call dmv or the sheriff/cops and say I saw this thing at a garage sale and want to know if it's stolen or if I should buy it.
They don't need to know it's already in my truck.
I get a bill o' sale, owners name and drivers lic number etc and I WILL call the previous owner if it was stolen and offer it back to them.
Only happened once in about 30 transactions and the guy didnt want it.
Homeowners insurance bought him a new one anyway about 10 years ago.
One serious side effect of the papertrail...
when I owed major medical expenses and they wanted me dead, they ran my DMV report and it said I owned like 3 trucks, 5 cars and a ton of motorcycles.
They all got used up and junked etc but were still on my dmv as a stable of assets.
it costs 30 bucks to remove each one from my DMV report as they go to the scrap yard or parted out.

Bring in a vehicle from outta state and you have to pay sales tax on it.
HuH?
yup, you own it?
You pay the state sales tax on what's its worth..
and THEN.......pay back registration for however many years it was unregistered. Typically a few hundred a YEAR on a 10 year old car.
so I got a po box in oregon and titled my stuff for like 14$ each.
THAT's why oregon is THE largest mfg supplier of million dollar motorhomes in the usa.
Who really wants to pay sales tax on a vehicle that costs a few hundred grand.
or even 10 percent on 75 or 80?
Ps feds, it's legal so dont come after me.

If you already own it, strip it to the frame and then try to tittle it. If it comes up stolen, tell them to come get it, all you loose is a frame... the owner may not want it back if it is just a frame
Another option if you know someone who owns a tow truck/salvage yard, there is a procedure in florida that when a vehicle comes into a tow yard, the tow yard then informs the registered titled owner that it is there. If they don't pick it up in a few weeks it becomes their property and they can request a title from the state and sell the vehicle to recoup charges.
Florida did also have a pamphlet on titling procedures for off-road vehicles

this is what i was told for Ontario:
You may go to any Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office . You will
need to bring appropriate documents as proof of ownership:
- Bill of Sale
- Sworn Affidavit (if no ownership is available)
