Gear oil or engine oil in the subtranny?

I am in the process of changing my front sprocket on my 82 200E. When I broke open the subtranny and the case that sits behind the recoil starter, of course oil came out, but not sure if I should use gear oil or engine oil when I put it back together. Heard different things and the shop manual does not seem to cover this or the capacities.

if its like my 200es the sub tranny gear box is lubbed by the engine oil

I'm with daniel 250r. Sure you can put a small amount of oil in the subtranny to not run it dry after reassembly.

^ Agreed, it's not a differential.... It gets lubricated along with the engine oil. Squirt some of that same oil on the bushings/shafts/gears and then just reassemble.

If you have the shop manual it ought to say "coat the gears" etc etc but it isn't a separate oil compartment so you'll be good to go :beer

Thanks a bunch. It's just that just behind the recoil starter and on the top side, it has what looks to be a fill plug that unscrews. Made me think for a minute that it had its own reservoir you had to fill. Guess that is just to look inside and see that oil is getting to it OK. Bear with me, I am new to all this but loving to work on it and learn from you guys as I go.

thats a hole to check your timing marks on the fly wheel, take the gear cover off and then put some oil in the motor:p
