I have a 1983 185s that has a 250 front end with a 250 top end. It runs but i can only keep it going by giving it gas. I pulled my spark plug and it was wet, black, and smelled like gas. Ive been doing some research and i guess my air/fuel mixture is too rich. Just wondering the exact procedure in adjusting the mixture and adjusting the idle. And if all else fails how does one clean the carb correctly.(do i disconnect the gas intake tube? just confusing and last time i played with it i popped off the tube and got gas all over the bike... oops:wondering)

Maybe i just need to get it hot, before it can idle, but i can only ride around and start it while the choke is on. If i take choke off while im riding, a couple seconds later it dies out.

Thank you in advance for any advise or info. A detailed picture diagram would be ever so helpful.

Turn off your petcock. Pull the fuel hose loose. It will leak some, but if your petcock is working only the fuel between the tank and carb should leak out. Remove the top of the carb with the cable attached. Loosen both clamps on the airbox and intake. Remove carb. Take the bowl off of the carb, be careful with the bowl gasket. Make sure the floats aren't sticking. When cleaning use carb cleaner to spray in the ports and openings. Back that up with air from an air compressor to blow out all of the orifices. Remove the main jet and check it to make sure it isn't clogged. If it is find some fine wire to poke through it. Use eye protection. You can buy carb rebuild kits from www.bikebandit.com www.denniskirk.com or ebay. This place has parts too. http://www.dratv.com/
