Hey Guys have a question about a 1984 Tecate. My Friend just bought it from a shop in our area for 1000 bucks the suspension was all rebuilt and all new bearing in the engine. As Far as we can tell it is stock except for a silencer that i beleive is off a kx250 like a 1999 around there. i rode it on my frozen dirt driveway and it seemed like the gears were extremely short and it didnt seem real fast. i was just wondering if anyone knew the top speed of the machine and if a 350x is faster than it.

The top speed of a stock Tecate should be around 60 mph. The 350X and the Tecate have around the same top speed, but the Tecate will get there a little faster. The picture you posted is an 85 Tecate (front disc brake).

My 85 Tecate would probably do 60, but not for long. They are geared quite low by nature. I have 20" tires on it and the counter shaft sprocket is one tooth taller than stock, which keeps it right around the stock gearing with 22's. Whenever we have to do some road traveling, I am always at the back of the pack. I ride with Tanks350X, Dirtcrasher, Deepa, and a few others. A lot of 350X's, 250R's, and Tri-Z's. They all have a much higher cruising speed than me.
