So I was at Pismo beach this past weekend and my 200x died on me. I noticed that it was smoking a lot! I thought it was from the exhaust tape I used to seal my pipe.

I first checked for spark and it shocked me. I was holding it wrong.
Next I pulled the plug, put my finger over the hole and had a friend kick it over. It blew my finger off.
There was gas in the tank.
While in gear if you kick it over the bike lurches forward.

I am not sure where to begin!

Does it try to start at all? Does it backfire or anything else we should know about?

Id start by removing the CDI cover and the rotor and make sure the pin didn't fall out.

Nope it does not try to start at all. No back fires during starting but before it died it would back fire.

It was ran for awhile without a muffler. I am not sure if this would damage the engine or not. The previous trip I took the muffler fell off quite a distance from camp.

as erics350x said pull your cdi cover and make shure that pin didnt fall out because if it did that could be your problem as for running with no muffler thats not a good thing because it will burn your valves

You need to do a compression check. If it was smoking bad, it is probably time for a rebuild

I second that .

Hey whats up man! Glad to see another central coaster here! If you need any help at all with it feel free to ask, I am only about an hour away. I actually have a spare 200x motor from my old 200x I'll sell.

Yup first thing I did was a new plug! Tomorrow I will go check on the CDI.

inv3ctiv3 whats up man! I think you may be a little more than an hour out.

I may be interested in that motor. I have never tore down an engine before and I just did my first 2 stroke for my 83 Oddy. I am just waiting on my cylinder to come back from being honed.

I get up to SLO in about an hour ;)

Let me know if you need any help, I know my way around a 200x quite well.

I bought a compression test kit.

What should the reading range be?

I just got a reading of 27-29.

After thumbing through the service manual on line it says 164 psi.

I am way off!!

I pulled off the CDI cover just to see what you guys were talking about and I did not see a pin???

You would have to pull the bolt out of the end of the cam and pull the piece off to see the pin. If that piece won't spin, then the pin is good.

How did you go about doing the compression check?
If you didn't even get 30 psi, then there is deffinetly something wrong there. You need to pull those caps off and make sure your valves aren't adjusted to tight. If they are fine then you need to pour a little oil down the spark plug hole and recheck the compression. More then likely that won't help much, because to get compression that low, something had to blow.

For the compression test I attached the tester to the spark plug hole. Then I held the throttle down and gave the bike a couple kicks. The tester read 27-29. Then I read about the choke so I switched it over and tested it again and got the same readings.

that's pretty low if your doing it right. not sure your mechanical abilities, but if there's a chance your doign it wrong, you may want to engauge someone who knows about mechanics. tif your doing it right, then your cyclinder and piston are bad. time for top end rebuild.

I am pretty sure I am doing it right but hopefully someone will chime in.

I am currently doing a complete rebuild on my FL250 engine. I got a hole the size of a quarter in my piston. This was the first time I ever worked on an engine. The 200x engine looks alot more complicated!

yea the 4-strokers are much more involved.
a top end rebuild jsut stocker will run around $300 in parts and machining minimum and that's getting good deals.
