View Full Version : 200X rear brake pedal: loose: fixing with a bushing or bearing?

The brake pedal on my 200X is real loose. I looked at the repair manual and it states to replace the pedal when the bushing becomes too worn. But it is obviously a bushing inside the pedal and seems stupid to replace the entire pedal, so has anyone found the prefect size bushing for this? Or does someone sell a bushing meant just for this?

you talking? like loose as in rattles when the engine is running??? mine rattles when the engine is running, and its annoying, i loosen the kicker and push it in to push the pedal and the spacer? up against the the house and it stops.
last alittle bit so i think im gona puch rubber washers between it

The aluminum wears out on the small engine cover/brake pivot.......
I half started a repair for these. It required guys sending me there small engine case that it rides on which I machined. Then I machined the pedal and at that point you could just order a new bronze bushing (that could be greased) and replaced 2 "O" rings.........
But, no one wanted to pay for the work or the 4$ bronze bearing and o-rings. I have an 86 200X so I abandoned the project when I sold my 85 200X.

Yeah I was thinkiing something like a bronze or cheap plastic bushing. Anything to make it not rattle, and give the rear brake system a better feel.

you might get away with something found around the garage or local hardware store.the only problem i would see is that they dont wear out in a perfect circle.

I had the guys at work make me a bushing out of teflon for my old 200x, worked pretty nice too.

Probably a derlin, and UHMW bushing would be a good option.

The guys at work took a flat piece of teflon, maybe not teflon, it was white and they said would work even better than bronze, then they cut it to size with slight interference to fit my break pedal and they reemed it to fit. It's a pretty basic shop here where I work.

Well part of my problem is I am missing the plate that holds kick starter against the brake pedal, if anyone has an extra that would be great. Probably tomorrow I'm gonna find a washer that will fit for now.

I bet any money it was UHMW plastic. The place I worked at we used to call it "Poor mans Teflon" was great stuff. I have a bunch of it at home for odd "Jobs".

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene is a great product. Very wear resistant, but not smooth like a bearing. bushing or even an oil impregnated Delrin.
Brake pedals need to be free, but not sloppy like the 83/85 200X ends up.
I'll start a new thread if I don't get some responses to the following:
If ANYONE sends me there 83/85 200X brake pedal and the small aluminum cover it rides on, I'll get back on this repair/project and your modification is free.
I just ask you throw me 10$ to cover return shipping and the extra $$ will go towards your new bushing and 2 seals.
Then at any time it gets sloppy again, you just replace the bushing.
Also, if your cover is so worn that it leaks oil out where the kickstarter spindle goes in, I can machine that out to accept a bushing also. That would be a whole different operation but we can talk about it. I'm sure the cover is either discontinued or expensive, so fixing it would be a great option.
There are 10 ways to fix/deal with ALL this stuff. I know that money is tight for everyone and I need heat and electricity to repair this stuff too so I'll offer it as reasonable as I can. I could machine everything and use needle bearings everywhere but not many guys will want to pay for those bearings and the extra machining involved because of the tighter tolerances.
If I can tighten them up solid, with machining and new parts for about 30$, I hope that would be reasonable enough for you guys to consider......
I just need a donor and my email is below. Let me know and I'll get rolling on it :beer
ALSO - I need a measurement. What is the inside diameter of the brake pedal pivot?? I'm guessing about 46-48MM or around 1-3/4 inch or so ID....? Don't go small, if it looks under 1 3/4, call it 1 3/4 and not a 11/16ths. Of course vernier calipers would tell me the wholse story, but tnot everyone has those kickin around..........
