Here's my latest addition to the fleet, A one owner, locally owned 85 Tecate. These seem to be super rare in these parts, as a kid in the late 80's we only knew of one guy that had one and he was 100 miles away. Guy bought it from a local farm equipment dealer who was selling Kawasaki stuff as well. Owned it from new and probably hasn't ridden it in three years, stored in a mouse infested, damp, storage container hasn't helped it's condition.
Looks to be mostly complete (a few small items missing), does run on the main jet but with old gas and a dirty carb it will just die if brought down so I've only started it for a few seconds. It's a decent starting platform for a nice rider unfortunately I'm in the midst of restoring one of my 250R's so this one is going to take a back burner till at least summer or next fall. Lot's of time to get a shopping list together and filled. I got it weaseled into the shed tonight for storage.

looks like a very nice start to me, i'd clean it up a little and ride it before you spend all the money restoring it...

Thought about it but I'm not comfortable cutting loose a motor that has been poorly stored that long without a complete tear down and inspection (ie-Flywheel), tires are original and completely done, chain is ???. Not worth the risk of unknown catastrophic failure for the sake of a few rides. To inspect and change the items I know it needs I would be halfway to complete teardown anyway so might as well go the rest of the way. Besides for me that is almost as much as a reason to buy it as riding it, Restoring it is half the fun.

haha i know what you mean Ross, i barely ever ride mine. My 350x has 2.5 hours tops since the full resto. It's a lot more fun to have something to work on. I have the air cooled R, and an 85 T3 project at the moment and will most likely sell them once they are done...

Thanks guys, I'm venturing into unknown territory with this one, but I guess the 250R was unknown territory 3 years ago to me and I think they do all right.maybe it'll be a Yamaha in 3 yrs for one of each.

Nice score! I thought about calling that guy when I seen the ad. I would be pushing my luck with the Mrs's since she gave me the approval for the 350x roller and I just bought another sx a couple of weeks ago, Maybe one of these days I'll get a two stroke, :wondering or I'll wait until Hall's preformance starts making the 450r three wheeler's for the public ;)

Thought I would bring this one back up and show a few progress pics from the build up. I was going to wait on this one till my red R was done but you know how things go....... I think I had it torn apart before Christmas. I needed to get the hard parts to my plating guy on a trip we had planed out to Wi after New Years. It's just a "E-dog" spruce up, no powder coating happened this time, I did get all my hardware re-plated again and my cylinder went to US Chrome for re-plating as well, ended up back to stock bore:D. New Fast trekkers are mounted, all new axle, swing-arm, wheel bearings and seals, new bottom end bearings and seals installed. Cables, control levers, kill switch, air filter all new. I lucked out a week ago and found a second Tecate locally that had all new plastics, works shock, PVL ignition, pipe and silencer and reeds. All that is being put to good use on this one;).
Still a bit to go, Exchange the PVL, mount the plastics, a whole lot of little things to put back on and button up but I should have a good reliable rider for the summer.

Finished up the Tecate this week and today wasn't too bad of a day so I pulled her from the basement and put the finishing touches to it. Started in two kicks, and set right into an idle:Bounce:Bounce. This is my first Tecate I've ever ridden and i can't wait to get a couple heat cycles thru the motor, check all my bolts and get this out for a rip. Gotta say a big thanks to Tecat-z for knowing a guy in the plating business, John Swinehart for all the things he is reproducing, I've got them all. Matt, Ed and Pete and DOOM for having a benchmark to strive for, they have some of the cleanest, best running Tecates this side of the Windy City Thanks guys.
Still gotta play with the gearing though, 13-42 with the 18" trekkers will make for a wicked snappy woods machine, but I'll get killed in the sand:naughty:.
Here's some pics from today, Enjoy.

Thanks dcreel, Every thing has been painted, product of choice was dupli-color engine enamel, grabber green for those. gloss black on the frame. PJ1 for the engine. It will only look like this till the first ride. I was on a budget for this one.

Looking good Ross....now your running with team "DOOM"! We have the loudest, strongest, and the fastest Tecate's in the country bar none! If there is a faster Tecate out there in the country, and I've been everywhere, then I wanna see it and give it a spanking. See you all at Trikefest....DOOM will be waiting! That means you too T-3 Lopes!

Your giving yourself the best advice anybody could give you, you should be proud your smart enough that you dont need to be told, hopefully you have the self control to follow through :-) At the very least I go through the top end and the entire fuel system of every 2 stroke I have ever owned ASAP the last one was my TRX250R I found the piston was cracked...
Congratulations on the new toy looking forward to seeing it restored.

I love testing my Tecate up against T-3 Lopes in the field........it lets me know if mine is getting slower! But it isn't.....so its still a beat down for him! Last few trips to the field I have literally destoyed his Tecate......so I guess that leaves me on top! I dont want hear excuses, just results! BRRRRRRRRRRRR BRRRRRRRRR bye bye Lopes!
