hey guys i have an atc 200es with a cobra pipe that is running very bad, i set the needle clip 2nd down, plugs pitch black. set it at the very top and its still black and its back firing badly. also in both situations its putting out some black smoke. i have tried adjusting the air mixture screw but its no dice. any ideas?

Are you compensating jet size?

i have not rejeted at all, its running stock carb wise and a larger cobra pipe. keep in mind i have never had this thing running before. my thoughts would be it should be running lean from the pipe and just need the clip moved

timing could also be off if you haven't ever had it running, check you manual for setting the timing and set carb back to stock

i got it with a bent valve and i reset the timing and made sure it was right many times

The clip on the needle is only controlling the mid range... You arent compensating for the higher revs and the low end... Do you have your airbox and filter in place? Have you rebuilt the carb?

i havent rebuilt the carb. one thing i did notice when i was tearing the top end down was that it was covered in carbon everywhere. i;m running a stock filter set up with a oem style filter

Rebuild your carb.

i agree, you probebly have a very worn carb and need a rebuild kit. they are liek $20 for one off ebay witht he pre-formed bowl gasket.
bikebandit also has the pre-formed gasket kits for it for like $20 shipped as well.

Did you oil your new filter? (didnt over oil it, did ya?) Is your choke circuit staying on?
oscarmayer

there's no "choke circuit" it's manual choke. is the choke on or off?
you probelby need to lower the needle by raizing the clip up 1 notch. also what is the mixture screw set too? it should be turned in till stops and then turn out 1 1/2 turns. and start from there. adjsut the idle screw on the side by turning it out slowly to lower the idle.
does the bike smoke a lot?

ok the choke is not on, it only starts when the moons are in orbit, i can only get a sputter when trying to start it. also my head gasket started leaking, why though? i just put it on only 6 hours ago of riding ( i ran it just header so i couldnt tell it was running rich) and it only smokes black wich is unburnt fuel, my only conclusion is that it doesnt have enough compression due to the leaking gasket to fully combust the fuel

sounds like you need to engauge someone locally for assistance. it could be any number of things.
did you set the carb to factory honda specs?
(mixture screw on the bottom) turn in till it stops but not hard jsut softly, and then turn out 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns out.
turn the idle screw in 3 turns to get the rpm's up, then slowly turn out. idling hi will ont hurt. let he bike warm up first then adjust the idle.

so i got the idea of a hotter plug , went down bought a dr7es and put it in, runs good now!, plug is a hint too rich but that looking at it very closely, i let it run for a good 5 minutes same as before with good revs. so i'm guessing i just have a weaker coil so it wasnt fully combusting the fuel because it just doesnt make sense that it would dump in tons of fuel with the proper carb on the right settings. the idle is still a bit high but i may move the needle clip up one

alright got the chance to take it out for a spin it takes a while for it to settle down after a rev and the idle remains high still i sprayed wd40 around the carb boots and nothing could valves cause this? i bought new ones lapped them but never adjusted them

if you didn;t adjsut them correctly, then yes they can cause issues.

well i put another plug in it fired up and same thing it back fired alot idled high and rough, and after it died the plug was black and dry If you are having backfire and a HIGH idle and its rough, well I can say I own a 1984 honda atc200es big red, I restored it from the ground up, i will be posting pix soon and I had a similar problem and it was the needle jet and the pulsar unit was not timed right. Anyhow look behind your pulse generator cover, pulsar unit is out of time. It may be firing at the wronge time causing a high rev and backfire! that should do the trick.

alright thanks i will check the the clearance on the pulsar and the timing, the carb is brand spankin new and its running a cobra pipe! this should be a mean lean machine!

yea i know, i'm lazy! i will adjust them asap i just need to buy a feeler gauge, i will go out and see if the ignition timing is correct
daniel_250r

any one wanna explain how to set the ignition timing? the manual is confusing
daniel_250r
12-12-2009, 05:32 PM
alrighty i got the timing set and it seems to be much better, when i took the cover off the timing was 180 off, how did this thing even run?
