Well I picked up a 84-5 Tecate for $250. From what I understand the motor is a E-bay kx250 motor and I got the original in pieces in a crate. It came with a extra carb full ignition system and other misc parts. They were putting a new USED e-bay crank in it when they parked it. It's been spray bombed. Has a custom height wishbone(?) on the rear shock. It fires on the first or second kick and seems really fast. Just rebuilt the petcock. The rear shock has no fluid in it and the accumulator is full of water. I fired it up today and noticed fuel DUMPING out of the stator cover and where the wires come out. I pulled it and noticed the case and been cracked. I know the leak is the seal but why did the seal go out. I also noticed the flywheel moves in and out about a 1/8 - 1/4 of inch in and out. The flywheel is tight on the crank so its CRANK side play. Is this too much? It seems to run great but I don't want to damage anything. I know I'll at least have to change the seal. Isn't the entire crank side play eliminated by the crank bearing sitting against the crank halves? I hope the case halves arent worn in the bearing journals. Any thoughts?

I pulled the bolt on the flywheel but its tight on the crank.

as far as i am concerned there should be no crank movement.
I had a T3 that I ran a KX250 motor in until it lost 3rd gear. When I broke the motor down the crank was really sloppy in/out and some up/down, the worst i had ever seen. But, the motor ran really strong and the top end was fresh. Also the crank seals were not leaking to my surprise. It still was a ticking time bomb.

Wow. I rebuilt my crank because there "was" play. brand new hot rod con rod and still the same play. Isnt the old 1983-4 kx and 1984 kx had bad main crank bearings? something about less crome on the bearings or something?

Maybe I'll just throw on a new seal and RUN it. If it blows I got a reason to rebuild it in and out.

I've never heard of any "Bad chrome" crank bearings or whatever.
It's a roller bearing, and should have VERY little, if any play at all. There should ideally be no side to side movement AT ALL. If your crank is moving that much it's time to tear into it, no question.

I have the 84 KX250 bottom end and clutch side stuff but no side covers left over if you need anything later on.

Don't the roller bearings ride on the crank halves against the counterweights. When the case halves are tightened shouldn't it have nowhere for side to side play unless the bearing are moving in bearing holes in the case further than they should?

You'll know for sure where it's moving if you disassemble it. Wherever it's moving, it's an issue.

i would say the roller bearings are worn and ssloppy. The could also be turning in the case halves which has worn out the hole for the bearings. Eventually they fail and explode. The bad crank seal is a sign of a problem anyway.

Well then looks like I need to get into my 2 wheeled "death trap". I was concerend of the main bearing getting bad. This motor only came apart once and never went back together. Here is my see of green all ramed in the shed.
