I posted my first thread about a week ago, asking some questions about a Honda.. Well i went over there tonight and bought it from the old man for $350.
Obiviously it is in need of "some" restoration.

And since i am new to the ATC world i am grateful for any tips you guys got concering where to start etc.
Gotta hit the bed soon, almost midnight here in Sweden, work all day tomorrow =)
Took some photos tonight when i got it home, enjoy..
I'll drop by tomorrow when i get home..

looks like a really nice original machine, and wow how are those tires holding air?

ATC_Sweden
11-09-2009, 05:46 PM
Haha, the right one is not holding for long..Pumped it up and it just started leeking all over.. First on the list is to check the condition of the engine, tires come way down at the moment

Nice!

That would be a 200es here in the states right? 200e was only 82-83 here.

Rob

I've heard of this before here on 3WW. There was an '84 200e made that was the same as the 82-83 200e over here (chain drive, hi/lo, no reverse), but it wasn't sold around here.

sweet find man! i wonder how rare they are over seas? Never seen a chain 84, I have the 83, essentially the same machine except you have the 84 graffix. Nice speedo assembly too. thats a plus, and is that a horn?? Looks like it just needs some serious love!!. I would start by breaking it down, probably needs all new bearings, and brakes, clean and grease all pivot points. Obviously new rubber. As for the motor, judging by the looks of it, it is probably fairly low hour, and might not need much. does it turn over with the recoil starter? Carb needs cleaning or rebuild im sure. Check the tank for rust. It is really an easy machine to work on. Monroe Mike here on the boards is an excellent manual source, and is usually right there to offer it. Makes things much smoother when you know what your looking at!! Good luck with it, and keep us posted.

Nice find! Doesn't look all too bad. Those first 3 photos look amazing, not sure if it's your camera or the lighting(no I'm not making fun of your drop light lighting technique), but I love them!!!!!!!!! I also really dig your under house lighting looks cool. The photos are almost brochure like.

Just noticed the coil strapped to the frame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ya man thats a good camera, or the lighting makes it look really cool. Nice machine. Lol at the tires. Wish i had a speedo, for some reason......

Hey !

First off, thank you for the positive comments =)
The camera that i use is a Canon Powershot G7.

Not really sure what you mean when you write "coil" though =/

When i got home from work today me and my buddy carried "the corpse" down in the basement, i'm gonna let it defrost for a while, then i will go down and start pulling it apart.
Stopped by the Honda shop when i was going home to check the price on new tires, two new tires cost as much as i bought the ATC for =)

aldochina : Regarding how rare they are overseas, well they are not something you see everyday here in Sweden. The 350X i really rare, my brother has one though. I bet you guys allready have seen this video ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqERKcDkYNI

That's him, filmed that back in 2004..A nice splash, but in the end, fail :p

Well, gonna go down in the basement now and figure out where to start =)
Thanks for the support so far, questions will pop up :beer

I think he means the massive car type ignition coil that is fixed to the downtube on the frame.

I think he means the massive car type ignition coil that is fixed to the downtube on the frame.

Yep, the 12V automotive coil VS. the itty bitty stocker that fits under the tank. As long as it provides the fire is all that matters.

gettin into it huh? nicer than what i started with for sure. Unfortunately i never took any before pics, but if you do a search you will find my 200e resto thread. Yea, i would try to avoid getting your tires through honda, I think the oem style tires are discontinued, but you should be able to match up the rears with something similar to the front.

Really nice job there !
I would really like to do a total rebuild of my Big Red..The problem over here is that parts for it is hard to come by..

I will just try to get it as nice as possible with what i got. New set of tires and a bit of turtle wax will do the trick

Does anyone know what the "connector" i found behind the headlamp does ?
I would really like to know =)

I didnt really buy much, just restored what was there, aside from cables, pads, and bearings. thats an accessory plug, should be mounted by the headlight somewhere, i'll check. All big reds have them, but I have never sen any thing that plugs into them.

There was no airbox / filter on it when i started it plus it's the first time in like 5 years it's been started. Just wanted to check that it starts up and runs, now that i know that i can continue the work of picking it apart. The electric start did not work though..I'll check that later.
This sunday i will get everything but the frame..erhm, what's it called, dont know the word. Shoot sand on the metal so the rust and paint dissapear.

cox : Well i'm not married, but my fiance is patient with me. What does not show in the clip is the three other bikes i got down there. Nothing more on 3 wheels though :)

The basement is kind of my little dungeon, i also built a home cinema down there.

looks like a good start to a nice project.
the connector you found by the headlight is a 12 volt accessory plug, honda made spotlights and a couple other accesories that plugged into it, they used that goofy style plug so only their hondaline accessories would work and you would have to buy all hondaline. most people take it off and put on a regular 12 volt dc cigarette lighter plug, you can find more info on that by doing a search on the forum for "accesory plug".

lookin great!! fun cleaning all tose nooks and crannys huh! how did you get the tires off the rims? Did you do it yourself, or take them somewhere? Lools like its gonna be one nice red when you finish.

ATC_Sweden
11-16-2009, 06:28 PM
I removed the tires myself.

Yeah i hope it will be quite nice when i'm done, not aiming too high.

Fun to clean ? Actually yes, i find i really relaxing just. Some good music in the background and the hours just fly away :)

Tomorrow i will probably finish cleaning the engine and move on to the electrical.

aldochina
11-16-2009, 06:34 PM
What did you use to break the beads on the oem tires? It is very rewarding when you clean evrypiece by hand.

ATC_Sweden
11-16-2009, 06:49 PM
Not sure what you mean when you say beads, sorry :(

But i used 3 tire irons, one equipped with a large weight that slides, so you put the tire iron against the tire, and then slam the weight so the tire snaps off the rim.

aldochina
11-16-2009, 08:05 PM
you answered it thanks. The "bead " is the thick rubber lip on the inner diameter of the tire that seals it to the rim. So those slide hammers work pretty good then huh?

MonroeMike

looks great! are you painting the frame or getting it powder coated?

ATC_Sweden
11-17-2009, 06:59 PM
Hey, thanks :)

Pretty much everything will get sandblasted, then everything will be painted with a colour that has rust-protection in it.
Not sure that is the way to explain it / write it but that's how it is. :)

The thing that worries me is that when i get the stuff back the colours will look so fresh that the plastic will look really shitty.. Plus i need new stickers and that's not goinig to be easy to find. Probably just get some Honda logotype stickers ant put on the gastank.

Now, off to bed..It's midnight and it rains outside, it should be like 2 feet of snow this time of year, but it isn't anymore..Weird..

g'night...

11-18-2009, 01:36 AM
ahhh!! thats what gives it a little character. I know what you mean though. your decals dont look that bad. You can get reproductions fairly easily for most models, but i'm not positive if those are exactly the same as 84shaft us models. Either way its gonna look awsome!

that motor looks brand new! how did you polish it?

Jim mac
11-19-2009, 11:58 PM
after all the polishing on the motor, you going to have to rewrap the electical with new tape. Nice job! jim

ATC_Sweden
11-20-2009, 05:32 AM
Mudbug :
First i used a steel brush to get rid of the worst, the i used a dremel with a smooth steel brush, and last i used a polish cream called Autosol and some rags. The engine actually looks better in real life, the flash on the camera makes it look worse.

Jim mac :
Yeah, the wiring looks horrible =/
I'm thinking of rewiring it all inside of "flextubes" instead, gives it a more clean look i think.

ATC_Sweden

Well shrink wrap would definetly be much nicer..but, i think flextube is smarter, in my case anyways. Easier to change / add wires with the tube.

Yeah the "Z" beats most of the 50s, the one i got is tweaked a bit though. ;)

Today i will put the engine in place, then start working on the electrical and hope to get the starter moving. If not i will probably buy a Lifan 250cc and put there instead.

The fork..Yeah on that note, that was actually i mistake from the paint shop. It was supposed to be the original color red/silver. But i think it looks better this way

Hey guys, i think i'm in deep....trouble..

I started to look at the electrical today and it's a bit hard to understand it..

I got the scheme from the 82-83 200E, and the 84 200ES, but neither is the right one. Because i have an 84 200E, so i don't have a reverse light, but i do have the DC outlet, and some other things differ also, fuses etc.

The problem was that the electric start did not work when i fired up the Big Red, that's why i have to find the problem..:wondering

So, i really dont know where to start..

Could you give a little more detail? It is the wiring harness that came off that machine, right?

Honda was usually great about not using the same color wiring near anywhere they could be accidentally connected. I put the wiring harness on a Trail 90 that was in a box and just hook up the wires that match in color and you should be good.

Now if its got a different harness that doesn't come equipped with e-start then you'll have to wire it in. Do you have most of the starting system in place? It would be easy and clean to run a starter seloniod off the 12V outlet, that way you wouldn't have to splice and factory wires.
