I went to look at a 85 big red 250es today and I couldn't get the dipstick out by hand. I didn't buy it yet or hear it run but want to go back and check the oil before I make an offer. I'm weary of using pliers and cranking on it since it looks like cast aluminum dipstick. Does anyone have tricks for getting it out without breaking the top off?
Thanks,
Stan.

sometimes mine is too tight to get out by hand. I usually put a cloth over it and lightly clamp a set of vice grips on it. Shouldnt need too much force to get it out. But dont force too much. Good luck!

I guess I'll use pliers, I just didn't want to break it off.

if i was you, i would have the current owner take the stick out. you don't want to break it............

the cloth is so you dont scar it all up from the pliers BTW. you could also heat around where it screws in. Often makes a big difference.

Next time you go and look at it bring a torch with you. When the owner ask you what you're going to do with the torch just tell him' "I need to check the oil."
