Well, guess im riding this thing to its full potential. :w00t: Tearing it down and found this- Glad its the end of the season and no more of this!

Going to get my 85 frame all guessted up before I PC in a few weeks. Getting all new metal bars and supports in the frame neck area and long bar or tube of metal around the downtube.

Judging by the haspin clay I can assume this happened at TF on the big track 4th gear pinned step up... This made my frame support on the spark plug and the recent crash at malvern really messed it up. The whole frame was resting o the spark plug which I broke as well, the porcilin is cracked the top of the plug is bent all to hell as well.

GEEEEEZ! good thing I got a spare 85 frame to replace it with, I run a 86 now but a 85 will have to do.

So this season I broke...

Frame tube
All major suspension bolts bent to hell
Handlebars
And my brake rotor is cracked.
And I have hairline cracks on my bottom tubes as well.

WTF!!!

I broke my frame in the same place, I had it fixed. Some months later, it broke there again, 3 other majors on the frame and around the footpegs. Thats when I decided to have a frame made for me, that I won't break. With that cool-head on a 85 frame, its gonna be hard be able to get to the spark plug.

yah, thats the only thing I was worried about.

I know the 86 frame was tight, going to suck if I gotta pull the motor to change my plug!

why not fix that frame.

cut a section out. weld in an internal tube. rewrap and rejoin. and then weld a piece of 3/8 solid tube down the lower section and upper.

seems like the potential exists to beef her up.

You should have no problem changing the plug. I have a Pro-X cylinder with a billet head and I can get it out pretty easily. I didn't have to mod the frame at all.

Yes, repairing the frame will work for a short time. The problem is, that part is gonna be stronger and the next crack will move to a different part of the frame. What will happen in the new part will crack(my case was left side downrails to the pegs) and it will re-break the center tube also. That frame is junk and as he said, there is more cracks around the frame that need to be repaired. You may not have a problem with the spark plug if you're not using a spacer plate motor, its still a tight fit. Welding in a new piece inside the center tube and welding it is a terrible idea, it will make the center tube so strong, that more stuff will break alot faster and in odd spots. You may not catch them until its too bad. When mine broke like that it was welded back together and strengthened, it just moved the break until the frame was busted in 6+ places bad. If you don't believe me, ask HRE what the 86 frame looked like and where it was broke. In all fairness, it did take 5 months for the frame to break again and when it did, it did in several spots badly.

I've got a spacer in mine and it still isn't difficult to change the plug at all. At least that's one less thing to worry about.

I have a NGK number somewhere in my notes for a plug that is equiv to the br8 and br9es that is half the height of a standard plug.

I think I read it somewhere over at banned. Ill look around tonight when i get time.

Here ya go, not sure what other heat sizes you can get, heres an example of an '8' heat range {BR 8 ECM} If you want an Irridium its {BR 8 ECMIX}

Heres a pic of what the short lil peckerhead looks like. Im not sure, but you may have to run a special boot for it, i wrote down TR51225 for a cap, but im not 100%

"BR8ECM"

The B is a 14mm thread diameter.
The R isa Resister type construction.
The 8 is the heat range. 2 being hot and 11 being cold.
The E is the thread reach. E being 19mm or 3/4in.
The CM is firing end construction. CM being compact type, low angle ground electrode

"BR8ES"

The ES is firing end construction. ES being Standard 3/4" thread reach
2.5mm center electrode

Isn't that cute, its like a spark plug but only smaller. ROFL! I'm glad I can just get the readily available BR8ES and it fits. Good luck finding that little sucker at the local parts store.

Nice info guys, never knew they existed. They're a bit pricey though, I did a quick search on Ebay and found them for about 1/2 price if your interested.

 Nice work on the frame, let alone the rest of the R!!

I would turn that frame into a boat anchor and gusset the snot out of it. I'm sure Mr' Hall has some thoughts on which areas need attention.

I'm not sure what to say about the suspension bolts?? If your running suspension that fits your weight and riding style, IDK what can be done about the bolts. It's far better that they bend and not break....

I wonder if your too dam fast for your own good Kintore?? You must be over-jumping stuff and landing flat to be breaking so much crap. IDT your much more than 180 lbs either :D

Anyhow, you've got allot of buds here. I'd try and stick with an 86 frame if you can so your rake doesn't change. That style frame seems to work well for you.....

I'd hop on D-MANS bandwagon with the chrome moly frame when you can sock away enough nuts :D

I think im going to try the 85 Frame due to the rake actually being different. Might help my turning radius!

Im not sure about gusseting the hell outa it, kinda concerned now D man did it and it just broke again so I dont know.

If I can can a C moly frame cheap enough I would but seems like its going to cost some serious coin!

Great thread. Sorry about the bananna. I too have this problem. Just picked up a 1985 frame and it has been broke befor. Didnt I laugh at it since I have 3 tecate frames with no cracks and breaks. And my runner has a piece of frame missing. Anyway. Where are these things prone to fail? We might be able to save a few if people were educated about this. They are 20+ years old. Even hondas cant last forever.

Mine bent a little futher back then yours did Kintore. I have seen big reds break due to not having the top mount in.

If you broke the frame why not get HRE to build you a good frame you shouldnt be able to break. with everything else aftermarket on the bike you should def have a beafy frame.

I have plans for a chromoly frame that wont cost me a arm and a leg.

But for the 2010 season its going to be another stock frame.

Can you just get the 250r frame? Do they make tecate and tri z frames? And how much is one worth?
