Muriatic acid or you can use a toilet bowl cleaner with a rust remover in it like snowbowl . just dont get it on the paint .

There was just a thread on this.... My choice if its just surface rust is to use a product called "Evaporust" can be found at most automotive stores or online. If its flakey i'd use rocks, bolts, nuts, BB's, marbles, or anything of that nature and shake the daylights out of it. Rinse and repeat until its clear and then seal it with something like POR15 or another type of tank sealer.

also herd of putting a few hand fulls of bbs ( bb gun) in the tank and shaking it around for a while... works like bead blasting... only slower

Muriatic acid

That stuffs killer.... We used this at my last job where we made tractor wheels. If they got rusty they would go for a bath :D

Need to be careful, you gotta keep moving this stuff because it will eat through the side of your tank.

So put it in the tank and roll it around and keep it moving, that is most important, otherwise... you're gonna have a hole in your tank.
