Het there.. My ytm 200 is smoking like a bandit. I have adjusted the valves, and it always starts first pull and runs awesome. It smokes constantly like rings are shot, but the comp readings are 160 psi and will hold that all day. I thought it would have lower compression if the rings were shot.. Any thoughts?

have you tried a cyl leak down test?

If the oil ring is shot it may smoke also. Not just the compression rings. The oil ring scrapes the oil off the cyl walls.

Oil ring eh? Thats a piston puller correct? Have not tried a leakdown test yet..I will look to see how. It holds 160 solid for hours though..

I thought if the valve seals were shot, it would clear up after awhile..

well if they were cracked bad enough i suppose they could leak 24-7, it sounds like you are going to have to open this engine up to stop it so i would throw a pair of rings and valve seals in

Thanks guys..I am currently deciding if i can do the work on this, and if parts are still available. if not, ill sell it for a project. I want to keep it, and i have all manuals. Just not extra cash to toss at it. i paid 190 and an ooold outboard for it. Rear brake needs shoes and lever. front works after i put new 17 dollar cable on it. Tires are shen nobbie on front, TRAIL PRO"S on rear. All fine. Clutch is slipping some also. Get on it, and it's slow, then it takes right off..Adjustment hasn't helped much. So.. at a minimum, im looking at valve seals, ( which you need to buy an entire gasket set to get apparently) Rings, (never been that far into a motor). Otherwise, plastic and seat are mint. one possible slightly bent front fork, and they probably leak some as well. Think it's worth it?.. And what do you figure the estimated cost for parts..? Thanks.. again.

The valve seals come in the upper end gasket kit.

i think its worth saving

I think so too kerick. So im going to need a top end gasket kit, and rings. and cyl. honing tool probably? Where do you bargain shoppers go for this stuff?

def save it I dont think there are many blue 200s

for the cylinder honing you are going to need to keep the bore in spec i would just buy a piston and ring kit and have it bored by a machine shop

Trying to keep it on the cheap..I would be looking at probably 150 mfor piston, rings, 30 for top end kit, and then i would have to troubleshoot the clutch..it's already looking like more than i paid for it.

if it has good compression its the valve seals. rings very rarely wear out on 4 strokes... wait till you take it apart but i almost guarantee the piston is fine and at most you will need new rings. thats in nice shape its worth investing even 2-300

After some thought, i have decided to keep it. this is my plan initially. First thing i want to do is Valve seals. If that works, awesome. If not, ill go in for the rings. So..Tell me if im close on this one. I can use my compressor to pressurize thru the plug hole to 90 PSI. remove the valve covers. making sure it's TDC. Then unscrew the small square nut on top of the valves, and remove anything under there until i see the seals. replace seals, and put it back together and test after adjustment. Is it that simple?

i bought new rings head gasket and base gasket for like $80 bucks for my Honda 200E.the rings all looked good which shocked me when i tore it apart.still cant figure why it was smoking so bad but its fixed now
