I unhooked the exhaust pipe to check on the gasket and found only a metal O ring in it about the thinkness of a finger nail. I take it that's all left of the old gasket donut so I replaced it with a new one about 3/16 think or so. I noticed on an online site that there are two pieces to the insert. Does anyone use more than the standard donut on the inside of the exhaust flange on their pipes?

Thanks.

There are 2 pieces to the exhaust gasket. One is the thin ring that you already found and the other piece is a metal ring with cuts in it which sort of snaps onto the cylinder. The thin ring goes into the end of the pipe. I have yet to get them to seal perfectly, so I use high temp silicone/gasket maker with 3 pipe springs. If you clean up the excess silicone really well, you can barely tell that it's even there. But it won't last forever. I always wanted to try a product called "chamber seal", which is an expanding heat tape, but have yet to find it. Hope that helps.
