I got some headlights from a old 350x, and i mounted them on my 225dxk i have the wiring diagram but i cant figure out how to get them to work. do i need a battery to run headlights?

can any one tell me what wire would be direct power for the headlights? or if i need a battery?

You don't need a battery to run the lights.

I don't think that DX is gonna run 350x lights very well.

my DX did not come with any of the handlebar switches so i just bought s couple of switches from the source. i cant figure out witch wire is power for the lights.

Try the red/yellow wire.

with the switch grounded to the frame it should work? or the ground going to the kill switch witch is how i have it now?. i tried most of the ones with current. and every time i turned the switch on with it grounded to where it is in the diagram it kills the engine. im not 100% sure if i tired the yellow and red wire.

I would determine that it has power before wiring anything. Use a multimeter, ground the black lead and stick the red lead on the red/yellow wire.

i did that. im not sure if i tried the red and yellow yet. but the ones that i found power from cut my engine when i try to turn on the lights.

so the fact that the lights may take more power to run can effect my engine running? i thought they would just be a little dull.

Overloading the stator can cause a weak spark too.

You risk the chance of burning it out.

thank you mike. can i ask another question. is there any danger in under powerering? i can just disconnect one of the 2 headlights. and run the second off the battery as say a highbeam? and would it be possible to swap out the bulbs for some lower powered bulbs? so my stator can run both?

Overloading the stator can't cause a weak spark on the YTM-225. There are 2 source coil in the flywheel, one for the lights and the charging system, and an other only for the spark. My 225 was running like a champ without the lignting/charging coil.

Luke, the wire you find that has power while running and that shut off the engine when grounded is obviously the coil shut off. Leave this wire alone.

^Thank you, I misinterpreted what I read.

ok. i tried the red and yellow wire. and it grounded my enegine out still.

could it be that im using the wrong ground? because when i flick the switch the lights do not come on at all. it just straight kills the engine.

anyone? anyone at all?

The ground is not your problem. There is only one ground in the entire wire harness. Your problem is that you are using the current from the ignition coil to power the light. This particular current is not regulated and if you try to use it your will burn your bulbs. Do you have a multimeter? There is a square box with cooling fins near the grab bar. This is the regulator/rectifier. One of the wire coming out from this box is 12V DC. Find it.

The original wiring harness is there i just need to know what wire is the one im looking for. i have a meter and i have tried a few that have current running while the bike is on. i do not have the original dimmer switch i just have a basic on and off switch from the source. mike told me to try red and yellow. and i had the same result. maybe the stator for the lights is gone?

I got the red/yellow by looking at the wires going into my switch.

The ignition coil power wire on mine is orange.

My wires may be the wrong color, it's an old machine after all.

Luke, here's a good YTM225 wiring post, these fellows seem quite knowledgeable, maybe you could ask either of them.
