View Full Version : 85 Tri-z rebuild

I bought this with the intentions of just riding it but one thing lead to another and now I am rebuilding the whole machine. This Z had been spray bombed big time, over spray everywhere. After the head gasket started leaking I got fed up and tore it down for a fresh start.

Just got the frame, swinger and carrier back from powder coat so I got it on its wheels again!

As soon as I finish buttoning up the chassis I'm going to tear into the motor, still debating on going with a big bore kit:D I need to pull the forks back off to get them cleaned up and painted, plus I got some new black boots to throw on in place of the stock yellows.

Once she is up and running I plan on putting on new white fenders, new black shrouds and a oem black seat. I hope to have it buttoned up early in the new year. The budget only allows me to do one step at a time. I'll update the thread as I get stuff done. Thanks for looking. Peace!

Looking good.. I love seeing Z's come together. You going to run those rims and tires with all the new plastics? Or change them all up to aluminum? That would look sweet with the black frame and white plastic!! Keep us posted on the build.Ill be watching.

I'll probably rock these wheels for a while. I would like to up grade them at some point down the road though. I will already have three times what I intended into this project when its done. Its been fun so far though:beer

Didn't get to work on it much this week but I did get the forks painted and new boots installed. Looks much better with the black boots. Bad new is the right fork is bent. Good news is a I am buying a complete ready to run motor with Sprock head, fresh bore and piston from ATC-Eric. I may still rebuild my current motor but it has a crack in the right case and the base gasket surface of the cylinder is kinda gouged a little where someone apparently pried it off with a screwdriver or something.

Man I need a garage!

I really like the black frame on your Z! It will look great with the motor you bought, and billet goodies to add a little bling. Are you going to run that oem front tire/rim combo? I have been in the process of putting a 200x front tire and rim on mine, but have been really busy latley and have become lazy on my project, and havnt got it done. It is supposed to lower the front about 3 inches when all said and done, I just need to fab up the spacers. Good luck with your build, and keep us informed!

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll probably run these rims and tires until I can afford to upgrade to some 9" rears. It has a 23" front tire on it now. The first picture of it in yellow actually made it look much nicer than it was, Eric. All I need now is a new rear master cylinder and to clean up the rest of the parts I haven't gotten to yet and I can get it all back together. Looking forward to riding it after all of this work/cash invested. Looks like I'll be getting it done just in time too, its about to get muddy on the farm for the winter which means no more dirtbikes till spring:( I only wish our freestyle ramps were wide enough for this Z  Can you see her up this high?

Questions for you guys. I have some good radiators for this Z but the paint is flaking off of them. Engine paint with ceramic in it good to repaint them with? Will a light coat of paint on the fins affect the cooling at all? Thanks

paint on the radiator fins doesnt affect cooling too much, and black is the best for cooling.

Spent the day getting the rest of the parts for this project clean and ready to install. Also, got the tank, pan, grab bar, tail and head lights back on. Went to install the skid plate then realized the powder coater coated over the holes under the swing arm. I need to pull it anyways to replace a bad poly bushing so I guess I'll just tap em out then. Next step is to get the motor cleaned up and in (when it arrives).

Soon, very soon:naughty: Just need to get a couple gaskets to install the billet water pump and then this baby can drop in. Couple more odds and ends and this project should be in running form. I need a good working rear brake MC if anyone has one to sell.

Swiss,Looks good.
I will check on those bolts tonite.
I have gaskets and a exhuast coupler for sure.

Banshee Master cylinders work, but you have to transfer the brake pivot pin from the old Z cylinder, becuase it is a different lenght than A shee brake arm connector.
The part that threads on the cylinder and the pin goes thru

I hope so! I really didn't have the gusto to work on it any today, jumped too many ramps yesterday riding dirt bikes and my body is beat. I did do a test fitting on the pipe, couldn't resist putting the fender and seat on for a snap shot. I hope to have it running in the next week or so. Lookin' forward to the day I can afford some new white fender's and a seat recovering.

Got the whole thing back together, fluids filled and checked and ready to go but cannot find my kick starter anywhere. DOH!!:wondering . Sucks knowing its ready to fire up, or atleast try to and I can't do it. Guess I'll need to try and find a new kicker. Oh yeah, I traded my thumb throttle to a forum member for a twist throttle months ago while this project was in boxes. The darn throttle cable seems like its about 1-2 feet too long. Right now its in a big rainbow coming out from behind the headlight to the throttle. Whats up with that?

Well, finally got a little time to try the Z today and she won't start. Its getting fuel and spark but will only start for half a second, sometimes back fires and kicks back. Sounds the flywheel key sheared off somehow? I'll get a puller and see whats up. I guess I'll go ahead and check all the specs on the elctronics as well. Any other ideas? If I hadn't been so darn busy in the last 2 weeks I would have sorted this thing out already! So Close :Bounce

It sounds a lot like the timing is off (sheered flywheel key) When it kicks back and backfires like that, it means the timing is too far advanced, and could actually cause engine damage. Dont try to pull start it. Do exactly as you said, pull the flywheel and see whats going on. Good luck, and it looks great!

Right now the engine is pretty much stock aside from the billet head, intake, water pump and wiseco piston. The original motor is mostly good too. I think I am going to tear it down and rebuild it, maybe make it a big bore for fun! This thing is plenty powerful for me as is for now though. I haven't been on a sport trike since around 1990 so I'll take my time getting used to it.

I still need to get atleast a new right fork in the near future. This one is bent badly and junk but it will do for riding in the mud and snow for now. Big thanks to ATC-Eric, Mosh, Raffa and everyone else who helped me source parts for this project. I'll get some videos of it in action up as soon as I get the chance. :D
