View Full Version : I now own a MEAN GREEN - 86 Tecate 250 - Rebuild

As dumb luck finds me today I heard from a friend of a friend who knew a guy with a "green three wheeler". This is just one of those things that doesn't happen for me often. Some guys fall into these deals daily. Not I...

Just so happens I got a number and investigated the myth. To my suprise I walked to the back of a wood shop in a pole barn to find an all original 86 tecate 3. Completely BONE stock, original rubber, original exhaust, coolant resi, headlight, etc. Its ALL there. ORIGINAL bore, unmolested. Yeah the tanks faded, headlight shell is cracked. Its got probably 40 hrs total on it since new.

This is an original owner situation, owner has title. Its a true survivor. Originally bought at a local kawi dealer who is still in business. It is one of 3 86's they actually sold.

Guy wants $1200 FIRM.... I give it an 8 as a true survivor. It runs like a top.

Do I pull the trigger?
What's a first time mean green buyer to look for. I don't think I can let this slide...

You are stupid if you dont buy this, I know money is tight for everyone but this is something you cant pass up. I had about the same deal come up this summer on my 86 T3 and I couldnt pass it up. Was from the original owner with title and everything. Didn't want to fork over the money but it is one of the biggest and baddest trikes ever made. Believe me the twist throttle on this 2 stroke is nuts. It will scare you the first time you ride it if you have never ridden one before.

Fact of the matter is that its truely going nowhere. He is a close friend of a family member. Has no clue on its complete value. Is significantly old and doesnt own a computer let alone a cell phone. He told me if I couldnt afford it then it would sit until I could.

Funny that half the responses in this thread come from people who don't.

You know you are destined to own one of each of "the big 3" 2-strokes. This will put you 2/3 of the way there. I predict that by next year at this time you'll have an R too.

I don't need to tease bud. He knows its actual value. He doesnt care cause he knows its going to a good home...

I guess I should've posted sooner. I have both an 85 Tecate and an 86. My personal preference is the 85, but that's not what you're asking. I love the 85 for it's simplicity and brutal power. It's very easy to work on and is arguably one of the most bizarre looking sport trikes out there. The 86, IMHO, is what I like to call a "Plastic hassle". I don't like dicking around with power valves, radiator shrouds, two radiators, and despite what people say, parts can be tricky to find for them. It's the little stuff people forget about. Seat hardware and dumb stuff like that, which as somebody already said, can be made by hand if necessary. I just like the 85 better.

With that being said, by all means DO NOT pass up on this trike! By the description it sounds like you won't have too many issues with tracking down parts or anything like that. Good luck Jeff.

10-06-2009, 10:10 AM
what i hate the most is the bolts to adjust the chain always strip out because of the aluminum threads. and my 87 sheared the flywheel keyway like 4 times.

honda250sx
10-06-2009, 01:29 PM
Well what I love is the fact that its an original one owner trike, mint, low hours, original bore with a history. Anything mechanical can and will be fixed correctly.

1200 is a steal. If its an orig owener bike on stock bore with those hours youre in great shape. I found one in the late 90's and thats bout what I paid and sold it for.

Aside from the right shroud and bezel

Coolant bottle, grab bar, and chain and disc guards are all sparce or have been for me at least.

Ive been looking for a near mint 86 for the past 10 years and havent found one. Just decent riders with skeletons in the closet. Go for it or borry money from someone. Just dont get to worked up.

the 86 i'm building has over $2500 in to it and its still in a million pieces. but after a year of getting parts i should have it together soon. it will be a rider, so i want it done right and be reliable.

i didn't think it was that hard to get parts. just took longer. and parts i couldn't get i either made or used something from a different bike.

it also took me longer as i basically started with a frame, swinger, and tank. everything else i needed to find. but it is possible to build one from almost nothing.

I can't wait for sun, sounds like a good one. I have tecates and worked on many others. The rear shock will prob need rebuilt but even with rebuild will soon blow again, I'd look for aftermarket unit. Check shift lever thats its nice and tight on the shaft, alot of them are loose and it strips out the shaft splines. Fuel valve is a cheap design, get a banshee one. Water pump seal will prob need replaced soon if its the original one. Get a Ricky flywheel before the oem one comes apart and tears up the stator and case.

Any tips on changing the plugs on these? Special wrench? Its a PAIN!

Previous owner ran NOTHING but golden spectro in this its entire life. One little premix bottle to five gallons of 93 octane. Not sure what that calculates to but it doesnt make sense to change a good thing. Its a 24 yr old machine on an original motor.

I need to ditch the twister. Its just to retarded to ride with. I dispise it already in just a short time.

Need to get with Hornet and get new headlight and shrouds. Already have new plastic coming from Kawasaki dealer. Got all new ALLBALLS kits for it all around. Got a new RK xring for it and ordered sprockets from Sprocket Specialist.

I'll investigate the flywheel and waterpump as well.

Stock rear rotor gaurd is in MINT shape. The coolant bottle was melted slightly by the pipe at one time and there is pin hole in the top of it. Shifter is loose. Probably going to need a shift shaft if its still available. I tried to tighten it up already. Shock is a little spongy.

The only thing it was missing was a lower chain roller. I quickly put a new 34mm ALLBALLS one on and took care of that problem.

When the shifter on my Tecate got loose and wouldn't tighten enough, I file each side of the inside of the crimp so it will crimp down more. It hasn't loosened up since. Just an idea.

for the spark plug, look in the tool kit for the plug wrench, it is easy with the wrench, I have never tried it without it but it does look fun

i understand where you are coming from with the twist throttle, it is crazy to ride with the twist throttle on a 2 stroke like this

I found by T3 in about the same condition as yours from original owner and it had the plug wrench in the toolbox

Great buy and hope you take care of it for a long time

Its a looker...the trick for the spark plug is to get a spark plug socket with a hex on the top, then you put a wrench on the hex. It will take a lil finese and be tough if you have gorilla hands though.

One pint of golden spectro with 5 gallons isn't enough oil, since its a blend add more to get in the 24-32:1 range, the crankshaft will thank you for it.

3Razors
10-13-2009, 02:14 AM
If its stock you should have a Mikuni vm34mm carb. You can use the stock thumb throttle from the 87 Tecate 4 (not sure about the 88 because it came with a keihin), it accepts the original Tecate 3 cable no problem.

Golden Spectro is ment to run between 40 and 50:1 you will have sludge blowing out the exhaust any richer. i ran a lot of 2 strokes for years with Golden Spectro at 50:1. this oil at 50:1 provides plenty of lube to the crank bearings
"Because we significantly reduce excessive solvents (present in most two-cycle blends), running Golden Spectro® Two-Cycle Pre-Mix Blend at leaner ratios provides a higher level of detonation protection, stops plug fouling and smoking."

Funny you should mention this indy. The previous owner swore up and down he added one bottle to 5 gallons. Its all he has ever run in it. Its a 23 yr old bike with an original motor. Never been torn down. He said anything else and it will foul plugs like a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro.

Conflicting info I guess.

Thats an 86, back when I was running 82,84 and 86 model 2 strokes, all I ran was one bottle of Golden Spectro to 5 gallons. If I just rebuilt the topend, I'd use 4 gallons of gas.......

I never blew up any of my 2 strokes back then and I rode them pretty hard :D

I would never run a synthetic/petroleum blended oil at 50:1 no matter what the bottle says. Full Synthetic MAYBE if its just a trail bike without alot of wot. Its all marketing hype..And I've found that more oil does not equal more spooge and fouled plugs if the bike is jetted right. I'm sure that tecate runs just fine the way it is however I would not consider that the end all because yes it is 23 years old but it has low hours and prob hasn't been run too hard as the stock tires are barely worn. I guarantee if you took apart that motor and mic'd all the surfaces out you will have more wear than if it had been run at 20-32:1. Take 2 pieces of metal put a tiny drop of high tech synthetic oil between them now rub them together hard and at 11k rpms for a couple hours ...now try it on another set but with lots more drops of oil between them this time ..now after all this measure the metal pieces and calculate the wear ...every time the one set with more oil will l always show less wear doesnt matter what lingo they used on back of the premix bottle to sell it. The more rpms you have the more oil is needed, plus more oil equals more power and less wear everytime. Gordon Jennings, Calvin Pollet, Harry Klemm and any of the other top 2 stroke builders in the world will say the same thing.

fabiodriven
10-13-2009, 07:59 PM
Really John? No big deal huh?

Lately I've been using alot of synthetic, but the Spectro has always been the old reliable. I always have a bottle on hand. Myself and all my buddies have all run Spectro for as long as I can remember, and all of us have always done one bottle to five gallons. I'm talking since I was 12 so that's.......18 years. Never had a problem.

I don't know of any others off hand, I have heard hearsay that the Bayou series quads might used the same throttle but I can't confirm it, maybe cross reference the part numbers to find a match.

10-13-2009, 08:05 PM
Well I can tell you one thing. I wont be riping it around WOT all the time. Hell I'll just back yard cruise it and rip it down to my buddies place now and again. I'm not out to do any ridiculous long hour riding. I think I'll mix it 40:1 and run it.

3Razors
10-13-2009, 08:14 PM
In that case you should be fine. Its same as 2 stroke Trials bikes that are torqing around obstacles, the manufacturers recommend 60:1 because they dont ever see any high rpm.

Razor this thing smokes now at the presumed to be 52:1... I cant imagine this guy running 24:1?

What do you run your T3 at?

3Razors
10-14-2009, 05:38 PM
Smokes like mesquito control or just more so than other 2 strokes you have been around? Assuming that the motor is solid with good compression I'd say its the 50:1. The thing is that Tecate is showroom stock with probably the factory jetting which is designed for the factory recommended 20:1 ratio. When you have a 50:1 mixture you have to lean out the jetting also to compensate for it. This is where it gets confusing for some folks but richer mixtures need larger jets and leaner mixtures need smaller jets (it has to do with flow rates of thin/thick liquids.) With that jetting you have too much gas/oil mix flowing which will run rich, foul plugs, and smoke alot. As an experiment you could drain the present gas and mix up some 20:1, it should clear things up and pull harder.

With blended oils like Maxima Super-M, Yamalube, Honda HP2, Goldenr Spectro ect I mix them 24-32:1. I run my Tecates at 24:1 with a blended oil.

Another tip is to try and find a oil with a green or blue dye. This helps avoid that brown discoloration with the tank. Also I'd snag a free flowing silencer like DG or so, it will really wake it up!

Great looking machine Honda250X! I would say that for $1200, with a title, you shouldn't have to lose money on it. Sounds like it was a good deal for both parties.

Ok so i just got back from seeing this thing in person and I can say its NICE!!! Not to mention i got to ride it....THIS THING IS FACKING NUTS!! Im cruzin along and decide to open it up a little, not nearly all the way, and this thing accelerated balls to the wall. Felt like a rocket ship and i was going to take off from the ground! I have never been on anything like this before. I thought my 350x was pretty nuts but this thing scared the **** outta me. I can only imagine what some work will do for this thing. Thanks again for the ride Jeff and yes this is as nice as he says it is...

Started collecting new parts for a new project. My local kawi dealer has alot of stuff on the shelf. I bought alot if not all the T3 stuff. I ordered a new front and rear fender as well as a new T4 thumb throttle. Thank goodness I get cost on this stuff!

Thanks to Justin at Hornet for the sick repro shrouds and headlight bezel. Speed and sport even hooked me up with decals.

Got some more parts stashed away. New RX-Chain. New PBI sprockets 13-37. NOS kick starter and fork seals. New Tecate 4 thumb throttle. New bumper for the shock. And of course a microfiche for it.

Waiting on more allballs kits. Seal head for the shock. NOS front fender and rear fender.

Thanks to 3Razors for the tip on petcocks. I was going to get a rebuild kit for my 86 but he advised me to just replace it with a banshee petcock. Which works great for me working at a yamaha dealer. Total cost was just over $14 dollars for a COMPLETE unit. Thanks man!

Got the front fender in finally. Waiting on the rear yet. I got the rest of the allballs bearings and two bearings for the uni-trak linkage. Setup a Sudco dealer account at work and got the parts I need to freshen up the carb. The stock carb has a 3.3 needle and seat. Thats just huge!

Anyone use an AllBalls seal head for there shock before?

Finally got all my plastics. Still trying to decide on frame powdercoat. Debating on a ZINC plated frame. I just think it would be totally different. My tucker rocky rep gave me some free contour fat bars and mounts so I figured I'd put them to use. Its nice to have that kind of connection.

Trying to get ahold of AussieDuner to see if he still makes the UFO air box covers. Anyone know?

Machined a master cylinder cover, anodized some stuff, and etched in the dealer I work for's logo. Received Shawn's repro rubber grommets. They are super nice! Thanks Shawn.

I have a brand new tank on my 86 that has been sitting for years and has only had a sniff of fuel in it. I could probably sel it for more than the entire bike...... One of these days I will go through it and get it running again.

All this Tecate stuff going on lately has really rekindled my interest in getting mine together and rolling. Had to have the swingarm x-ray'd and welded as it was cracked in a ton of places. Got that all squared away now. Also had to find a rear axle carrier that was not demolished like mine. My original had been welded way to many times. I finally found a mint one. Thought I had two mint ones but a member who will go un-named screwed me over on it. They are hard to find!

Got the shock polished by GKing, got the o-ring and piston whiper from Shawn here on the boards. Installed a new bumper and allballs seal head as well as a NOS HOT PINK progressive suspension rear spring!

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i151/brauerpower/86%20Kawasaki%20Tecate/shock.jpg

Powdercoated the front hub and loaded with new allballs as well. Sporting one of the first stainless front axles Ronnie ever made. Thanks to Ed tecate-z for sending them to Ronnie to have them made. This was the last thing Ronnie sent me before he passed away.

Man! Its been a minute since I had a second and a half to work on anything with wheels! My job has kept me traveling, installing and repairing CNC machines all over the place! Got some time to play with parts for my Mean Green today. Finally got my brake calipers all back together with new pistons, seal kits and pads. Along with some fresh powder coat and some super trick Titanium bleeders and banjo bolts! Need to powdercoat the swingarm still. Had to have that welded as it was cracked in multiple spots. Got some fork boots thru WPS for the front end as well. The last picture is of the TRX250R thumb throttle that I modified in the mill to accept an 86 KXT throttle cable. It has been fitted with an insert that has the proper M8x1.25mm thread to accept the Kawi throttle cable. I love the smoothness of these throttles. I wouldnt have had to modify this if I had an 86 250 R cable laying around but this literally took 15 minutes to do on the mill.

Hope to have my new Dura-Blue axle for this sometime this week!
