I know that the 83/84 250R had some just fine suspension.... We actually take the 83 damping guts and use it in a 350X for better front fork ACTION. Is the 81 that crappy as far as diameter and travel?? IDK what the front fork specs were in 1981, I did not know they were that poor and are they the same as 1982??

If so, thats your answer :D

Problem is, you have to "match" your suspension. Guys put 86 250R front forks on a 250SX which when matched to the rear, it is a complete waste of a great front end... A 200X front end is a GREAT match for the 250SX stock rear and no more is needed.

IDK much about the 81 250R but I thought it basically ran something close to 200X front shocks?? Maybe I'm wrong, again refer to your specs but maybe you just need some freshening up and new oil?

OR>>>>> Maybe it was 1982 that the 250R got some decent front pogo sticks??

Have you signed up at Airfoolers.com? Those guys are dedicated to the air cooled 250R'sw and I'm sure that someone there can steer you in the right direction. :beer

Regardless - to answer your question: 200X forks are decent and pretty good if your about 175lbs and keep the oil fresh and play with the oil level and some spring pre-load "homemade" spacers.

Keep the questions coming, sometimes it takes awhile.

Good luck!!

the 81 had the big old baloon tire in front and the 200x frotn end had a narrow and taller tire. i heard its better but i was wondering why. plus i have about 7 more inches of suspension travel in frotn now

The tire doesn't tell me much....

Did it have 4"s of travel and now 11"s ?? I'm confused...........

Got any pics of this front end? Maybe the 81 was crap and any 83-85200X front MAY work, but now your getting into brake side, steering stops etc etc.

I thought my bud Fabio had an 81R (maybe 82??) and although it may be a balloon tire, I didn't think his suspension looked that far off from a 200X suspension.

I may be smokin crack, but at least I'm posting and it will get more help rollin your way bud :beer

We'll get ya figured out one way or the other :D

Poor think was harsh, bottomed out over every small jump and bump - my rock infested trails? Ugh!

Didn't turn all that great & uses a small brake rotor.

Then I upgraded to the 200x front ..

More travel, handles terrain much better. Way smoother ride. Narrow tire makes for much improved tracking and steering (Mr.Honda switched to narrow tire and longer swingarm for a reason!) Bigger brake rotor = better stopping.

IMHO, better looks too.

Only thing you have to 'mod' is the steering stops.

Is a 200x virtually a bolt on? Does it use the same ball bearings as my 81 250r?
