there's a guy I know just up the road from me who bought two big red 250's both 1985's. he realized he didnt want 2 and is selling this one.
this poor girl needs a choke cable, seat recovered and the electric start or reverse isnt working. the motor runs very strong. good compression and power. I drove it today for about 20 mins and found out everything I ned to know. when i shake the bike the back left tire kinda shakes. Im thinking the hub is loose or the bearing is gone. it has a plow hook up and a skidplate underneath. Its a rust bucket but im willing to take it on if my parents buy it for me for an early xmas gift :P so anyway, heres some pics of what she looks like now. BTW he is charging 500 because that is what he paid and he dont want to lose money. its a fair price IMO.

also forgot to mention that the battery does not work but the headlight do. The front tire is as bald as bologna skin , but he is giving two decent tires with the bike. I know a guy who recovers seats for 50 bucks. The fenders arent even bolted to the rack so that makes her look droopy FYI

well I bought it today! the main problem with her is that there is a custom - crappy made header on it. the flange is tight to the head with no leaks, but the header itself is broken free of the flange! so he has been running this for a while. thank god he didnt ruin the valves. I done a few things to it today. adjusted valves, cleaned carb and air filter. still makes the ticking noise but i know it is just from the header being broke. a few things need to be tightened up. and she will be a good woods bike. oil change tommorow also. I will have more pics up.

I have a pretty good sandblaster already and a paint gun, so when I get the front rack straightened out and painted and all that it will look much better. there is one spot on the rear frame where it is rusted out, another weld job I guess. I will have more pics with progress. thanks for the good feedback guys! :TrikesOwn

some more work done to the big red today. I realized that the exhaust studs on the engines are shot. the threads go about half way, and from the header being loose it must have vibrated and wore the threads down closer to the engine. so even if they are tight they will only go half way. so we are working on getting that out. going to take the head off tommorow to drill them out and re-thread them. I checked the hubs, suspension and brakes. The rear brakes are in great shape. those two phillips head screws came out without a problem. she just neds brake shoes now. One more thing I noticed is that the swimgarm is loose when I shake the bike. is this a real bad sign? can you just tighten it up without replacing bearings etc? switched the rims around to the correct way, and rust checked a bunch of stuff. here is where I'm at. also a pic of my garage/workshop. check out what this guy done for the footpeg mount. I never thought of doing it this way.

Nice " Man Cave" MudBug! I'm known for taking pieces of crap and bringing them back to life but I think you certainly got your work cut out for you on that Big Red:wondering I guess it's worth it though cause it's a HONDA:w00t: and its a Big Red:w00t: Good Luck!

its actually not that much to get running smooth again. the engine is good and has better compression than my other one. but she leaks a bit and we already have gaskets for it and we are working at that today. frame needs one weld near the back. might replace that small section with new pipe. after some cleaning and paint you'll be suprised what she will look like. I'm sure as hell not going to let another trike go to waste, she's in good hands now! :)

Got the top end of the motor off today. putting new gaskets in and fixing the exhaust studs. anyone know much about the swingarm. it has some play where it pivots on the frame. can you just tighten it? take a look at the rust on the rear frame! going to replace that section I guess. took a pic of the shed from the outside. any feedback is appreciated! :)

im not trying to restore it. if I was I would have used one of my other two BR's. i'm just trying to get this one in good running and working order for towing wood, plowing snow etc. once the engine is done i'll just get the welder to get the frame structurally sound if you know what I mean. :)

some more work done on the BR today. got the seized exhaust stud out. it was in there real good. even after drilling a hole and using an easy-out, it just cracked the easy-out. but after some grinding and welding and twisting we finally got it free. shoved the rocker box cover, and cylinder in my parts cleaner. (that thing is awesome!) they are soaking for the night and tommorow ill dry them and add some nice paint. all is left is to...
1. get the 2 broken bolts out of the cylinder
2. paint
3. weld frame
4. put on my decent tires on the back and a new one for the front.
5. attempt to fix swingarm bearings and forks
6. Oil change (engine & rear end)
soon enough boys!

got the top end out of the cleaner today and they are dried and ready for paint. I decided to take off the crankcase covers and do them as well, b/c everything on the engine has a 1/2 inch of oil and sludge on it. The covers were hard to get off but when I did, I saw a broken bolt. (this is on the left side) near the gearshift assembly. I dont think I broke it because I never touched it. when I got the cover off, it was just lying there. I checked the diagram on bike bandit and it said it was a gearshift spindle .......$89!!!!! this has got to be a misprint. its only a small bolt and I thihnk it hooks onto the gearshift somhow. any ideas what is it? well, everything else went good anyway. heres a few pics of my parts cleaner, the new exhaust studs and other things. and of course the broken bolt.

Don't have a Big Red, so I can't help there.
I do have a suggestion though. Next time clean the engine before you tear it apart. Gotta be hard to work with all that crude on everything and it's gonna get inside.
Nice looking pup you have there.

that bolt i believe is the bolt for the return spring on the shift lever. i had to buy one for my last 250sx i did. they are like $7 i think from Honda
loosk good bro but little tip go buy some engine degreaser and use a pressure washer befor you go cracking the engine in the frame liek that keeps everything a little cleaner inside and out. \
but looks like a decent buy keep posting pics!

24652-HA0-000 is the Honda part number for that pin. It's a hardened steel pin that is notorious for coming loose in these engines. After they have been loose for a while, they usually break. The only good news that I might have is that if it was in fact loose, it should be easier to extract the rest of the pin. Good luck. BTW, the part shows a price of about $5 US. You might consider using some blue Lok-Tite on the new part.

now whats left to do:
-get bolts out of head and order new ones.
-order the shifter bolt that was broken.
-put it back together and find out how to do the timing.
-move on to frame and tires when shes running good.
how do you fix the timing?

how did you paint the topend and side cases? just hand sand and use like heat resistant spray paint? I have been looking into doing a job like that.
MudBug

just sanded using a rough sandpaper, and then a smooth one after. I used Tremclad High Heat Enamel for all parts. I used it on other engine parts before and it worked great. make sure you get ann the oil and grease off the engine before you attempt to paint it. good luck! :)

yeah, the top end is going back in now, slowly but surely. just waiting on a few seals for the kickstart and shifter and the new bolts to come in and to pick up some oil. should run like a top.

I didnt realize how much work she needed until I tore her down. but i'm up to the challenge. after new oil, gaskets for the crankcase covers and the bolts that were broke, im going to move on to swingarm bearings and then she should be a decent rideable bike. but the work never ends.

theres a little knotch on the shaft and you are supposed to pound in the thin part of the nut so it doesnt come loose thats the way it is on the 200's

the engine was spray-bombed by the P.O while it was still in the bike, and he sprayed it over the oil and dirt, so It looked like garbage. the top end and side covers is what I painted myself correctly.

some updates. got the top of the forks off and realized it was missing two bearings and thats why it had so much play. replaced those. sandblastd them and painted them black. should be a bit of a change from all red. The parts are soon going to be in so she should be up and running this week.

still waiting for the parts, and I realized whats wrong with the swingarm (also causing the left rear tire to be too close to the frame) they must have replaced the bearings before, and they tightened the left bolt up th whole way first. so now there is a big gap on the right where the swingarm pivots. so I need to loosen the left bolt and tighten the right. maybe the bearings arent shot. also noticed when i tip her to the side i can hear a bearing rooooooooooooooool down to the other side in the axle. weird huh?

Ive decided that working on the engine while its still in the bike is not going well, so I'm taking it out. I have to crack the topend back open to fix rings, and this way I can clean the engine a little better. And while im at it A can clean, weld and paint the frame. This bike is taking more time than I thought it would, but its only because I have no free time myself. Ill keep you posted!

Been a while. Ive been working on the rear rack mostly and im not going to run a front one until I find one local. Got the painted frame on wheels and now the motor is in. Im still figuring out the wiring  but she is coming along. For one the fenders need to be fixed up. Theres 3 different shades of red on this bike.
Still to do:
Recover seat, get tubes for rear tires and put a better one on front, get battery, new grips, finish wiring, clean up fenders, and then fire this sucker up. :naughty:

How was is connecting the shaft drive? i bought an 86 br bike complete but the rear end was taken off for storage apparently. Iv done a 200es rearend once and it was not easy due to frame clearance.
If you could kinda run me threw the steps of how you put the motor in and connected it to the rear end. did you replace all the seals in the process.

well when I pulled the motor, the front driveshaft came with it. I didnt bother taking it off the output shaft from the motor so when I was done I just manuvered the engine back in the bike with the driveshaft back down in the rear end. What seals are you talking about?
