I got 2 words for you: Power Washer! I just hope the plastics aren't all mud stained. Looks all original, The '86 350X with original seat and plastics is a hard to come by machine for some reason. Way easier to find a 250R then it is one of these. Good Job!!

can you imagine how clean it was before he took it on that last muddy ride 2 or so years ago, and left it to sit under a tarp!! Thank the 3-wheeling gods I found it when I did. I'll post some more pics tonight when i get home from work. It came with a couple bonus goodies:w00t: Anyone care to here the story behind this find?? Bye the way, I did not here it run, it was drained of fuel, and It kicked over and shifted like new. the only knwn problem is with the axle, he said last time he rode it he heard a pop or somthing, and there was lots of slop. I think it might have atually blew the bearing apart. havnt looked at it at all, but i did snap a quick pic, let me know if you can see anything. Seems like alot of slop on this side, much more than worn bearings, something looks missing.

Very nice find. What ever you paid just washing it for sure doubled the value. Does it run?

aldochina
09-17-2009, 07:23 PM
It was purchased just outside syracuse in Camillus. I gave 950.00 for it. In my opinion that is a great deal. I have not had a chance to get it running yet, as the tank and carb had been drained, and i want to change the oil caouse its been sitting awhile. also a little bird seed in the airbox. Heres the story of how I came about it, and what I know of it. I am always searching craigslist out to about a 300 mile radius. I saw a picture of this trike about 6 months ago, he was asking 1500.00, i wrote the # down but never ended up calling. yesturday i see the same picture, listed for 1200.00 he had 1 pic, that was crappy, with the mud, and tarp still covering half the bike. But knowing what i was looking at I called him to see what the story was. He had tried to sell it months prior, but only listed it a few times, and had no serious inquiries. After talking with the guy i new i better check it out. The guy bought it from the original owner 5 years ago, freind of a freind, it was his first time on an atv period! he joined the local riding club, used it for a few years on groomed trail rides, said he only put about 20 hrs on it, very easy use! then under the tarp it went. said he would take 950.00 for it. Which i gave him gladly. He actually told me he paid 500.00 for it. CAN YOU IMAGINE!!
Oh, did i mention that it has the original paperwork!!, 1 gallon honda oil, and filter, and a cherry extra headlight assembly!!

The bearings go dry, then the balls fall out and get jammed between the center tube and the carrier and sometimes it ruins the carrier.

Don't sweat it, take it apart carefully and hope for just bearings/seals.

Real nice find, all original - wish I got it but glad you did.......

heres the only problem with this wonderful score: for the last 2 years or more I have been ammassing parts to make a truly sweet as close to original 86350x as possible! with that, and the 1400.00 I have into my first 350x, which I will try to find a pic of, were talking big bucks, and with this new one, I have just about enough parts to end up with 3, - frame, and few odds+ends, I dont need 3, and need to recoupe some of these funds. I will obviously keep the new one, maybe sell the old one, and try to find a decent frame? the thing is most of the parts are to nice to use as rider parts, and that was the point, to have a nice rider, and a sweet show/snow piece. Sorry if Im rambling, its late, and been a long day!! Well heres some shots of (SOME) of my goodies!!

easy guys, as of right now I dont know what i will do, will most likely keep most parts for now, I have 5 headlight assemblies, a few exausts, so I can get rid of a couple of those. i have to go through the rest of my parts and see what I can weed out. I'll let you's know

cleaned carb today, wasnt that bad, cause it had been drained. outside was a mess!!, exaust was missing carbon cleanout cap, made new one, and drilled and tapped where old bolts were snapped. axle is about ready to come out, so I can asess the damage from blown bearing. I could tell the right rear wheel had never been removed before!!(SWEET) airbox and plumbing removed for cleaning, filter cage is kinda rough but i got a nicer one, it had a homemade filter, decent job on it acually. Threw it in the trash. I will clean it up good while its apart. Of course i broke the 3 header gaurd bolts removing that to get at the exaust clamp:mad:  they are like freaking butter!! So those will have to be fixed. I want to remove the header, but i DO NOT want to break any exaust studs!! judging by the amount of mud caked on there for the last 2 years they wont be easy, I tried the one that looks almost new, and it didnt seem like it wanted to come. so i left it for now. should I try after i run it while its hot? I have been hitting it with sea foam all day. Who has a good recomendation for this, i'm sure tons of you have done it. I hope to get it going tomorow, I will post some more pics+progress.

It pisses me off when i think how sweet this thing would be if he had only spent 15 min washing it before he put it away!! I'll get her back to her old glory!!

heres a pic of my other x, its an 86, all there, starts, and runs good, The guy I bought it from was not honest with me, he was asking 1800.00 for it, I almost didnt buy it, he said it needed nothing really. didnt get to ride it but around his one time, he ended up taking 1400.00 for it, and threw in 2 extra sets of wheels, so I went for it. After getting it home and riding it and getting into it, this is what i discovered: needs axle bearings, 2 lower exaust studs are broken, rear master cylinder leaks, (when full brakes work great), will need a clutch soon, in tight trails,stop/go it squeals a bit. has good comp, and tons of power, but definately smokes. has metal tank, but after a weel it sprang a leak, so I bought a plastic one. That is being completely honest. It has basically sat since I got it, awaiting rebuild, other than a few romps around the property here and there. I have a 350x front fender for it, has a rare hondaline black seat cover!! I have 1550.00 into it, and would let it go for 1200.00, would really make a nice machine with a little tlc. I think I obviously paid two much for it, but I was exited and nieve i guess at the time, I think 1200 is fair, with the 2 sets of wheels and maybe some other bits.

well i spent most of today on the 3- wheeler, got the rear end all back together, like new, put the carb I had cleaned back in, cleaned airbox, petcock, the tank is absolutely perfect inside!! Took the plug out cleaned it, couldnt seem to find a new one although i know i got em. turned on the gas, unfortunately it was pissing out the overflow!! but I kicked it 3 times no choke and it fired right up:w00t: Sounded very loud!! since it sat with all that mud caked on the motor, it must have rotted the header seals, I could see sparks when giving it some throttle and looking closely!! leaking by header pretty good I would imagine. Unfortunately befor I put the cleaned up and oiled chain back on I figured I would remove the case saver and clean the gunk and dirt from the slider and drive sprocket area. Well to my surprise I was disgusted to see that the stator cover was busted right in front of the sprocket, about a quarter size chunk right on the edge is cracked and pushed in about an 1/8" leaving a slight gap between the cover and case. How big of a deal is it if this was run this way for awhile. there has to be some dirt and stuff in there. So no oil flows through there right?, Just houses the stator? I'll snap a pic of it later! So now I have to get a carb rebuild kit, get the headers off without breaking the studs so I can replace the seals, get the stator cover taken care of, and some new rear brake pads and she should be good to go. I want to ride it a for awhile before i tear it all down for a very thorough go through!! Whats a good carb kit to get for these, and does anyone have a decent stator cover they could spare for reasonable $. Looks like it will be awhile yet before I get to enjoy a ride on her, but I did do a quick lap around the yard and boy I cant wait:p

got the moose kit coming, dont think I need it now, but good to have on hand. I realized the o-ring I used on the float bowl drain screw was to thick, it wasnt allowing the screw to seat properly. so it should be all right now. Just waiting for some parts so I can get it back together. trying to clean all sorts of little stuff while i'm waiting, this thing was filthy, filthy!! I thought the seals on the header were bad, but all that caked on mud rotted the one side right through. I had a real nice spare, just had that redish brown baked on mud all over it. the oem paint underneath locked pretty good, so I wanted to try and salvage it, but that cooked mud is tough as nails, I tried a few things, and nothing would cut it without using something abrasive, so I ended up painting it. came out sweet!! Hopefully the next pics I post I will have it all back together, and riding it. :w00t:

Aldo - if you never got that outer race out of the carrier you can weld a little glob inside there on the steel race and it should knock right out with the heat and the edge you now have to bang on.....

aldochina
09-27-2009, 12:42 PM
great idea DC, cant believe i dint think about that!! I was gonna get a dremel and die grinder and try that, but your idea is the way to go, I'll try it tomorow at work, and let you know.

aldochina
09-30-2009, 01:05 AM
that worked like a charm dc!! welded a few blobs on there, and beat it out, wasnt easy, cause the alum. was peened over the edge of the race on the one side. The race actually broke after some pounding, then it poped right out. the bearing surface is in great shape still, but the spot were the dust seal sits is a little beat, but I'll just grease the &*%# out of it, and it should be golden!

Dirtcrasher
09-30-2009, 01:56 PM
Good news bud.......

If the metal is that distorted try to heat it up and carefully beat it back to somewhat round. Then those little sanding drums on the end of a dremel work awesome. After that I either use 400/600 with WD40 and or my small 3 stone hone with WD40 and that gets it good enough to seal - at least in THAT application anyhow.

What a great complete 86 that is!! I have to build another one ground up with one of my reinforced frames and a crate motor.

Problem is/was, I was saving room for the 250F in an 85/86R chassis but I have nearly 75% of a 350X in pieces so I may just pop another one together; With a 450R rear end and 250R front of course :D

its been a while, but i just about got this thing ready to rock. I am very happy with it overall. I have about 12 hundy in her as she sits!!:beer Heres what ive done:
replace headpipe with a spare-new gaskets
replace bearing carrier with a spare-new bearings and seals
rebuilt forks
new front rotor
stator cover repair
swapped front hubs, cause the origi needs bearings, still have to put the skids back on, and install rear pads, and a few small items. Only major issue is after i got it all back together I thought I was gonna just pull the front lower mount bolt to replace the rediculous disintegrating oem spacers with some from a member.  not happening!! Seems to be quite frozen. I have been PB-ing it and hit it with some heat and a hammer, but it wont budge. Its frove where it passes through the center cases. How much heat can you put there without damaging a gasket or something? It may have to stay until I want to tear it all down and have to cut it! I hope it doesnt come to that.
lots of cleaning. there's still lots to be done to make it perfect, but I havnt gotten to ride it yet, so this is as far as i'm taking it for now. Heres some pics for ya's!!

^ Pretty sure it's the TUSK SS rotor that last spring was on closeout... Like 9.00$ or something ridiculously cheap....

I think I got about 6 myself, 2 fit the 86/87 200X which was awesome!!

yes it is the closeout tusk rotor. got 2!! yes dc it is the lower front mount bolt, the same one that had the half spacer!! frozen in the center cases. I know what you mean, all the rusty bits look like ass!, but until I get a pc set up and some saddle time this is how she stays. Gkings work is great, and very reasonable!!, Got the clutch side done 2, just didnt put it on yet.
