Yea this is an 1982 that was raced semi pro from 82 to around late 85, also alot on ice. Iv'e had it about 6-7 years, and fianally deceided to do something with it. The front end was put on back in the day along with a Hondaline extended swing arm. It is a blast to ride tons more power than my 86 200x( which also has some mods) . It has an 83-84 engine thats 60 over. I still have a few things I am going to do to it, I have a new set of Bossesin power reeds, put a back brake set up on it and a few other things. i have a 85 200x that kinda became a donor for this 250r. But to ride on the trails I wanted to have a head light and tail light. I also made the rear grab bar, that turned out pretty cool. All alluminum. It has a really weird air cleaner air box set up on it also( see pic) , I would like to find a factory air box maybe for it since I run them in the sand alot.

It's a nice looking trike. I know the 200x front end is an upgrade, but I have always been fond of of the wide tire front ends. There are plenty of 83 and later trikes with the newer skinnier front tire, so let these old survivors have thier personailty! LOL There was nothing like seeing a herd of wide tire machines coming round the bend!

That's one of the nicer first gens I have seen on here! That front end really makes it look sporty.

The front end was already changed when I got it, plus I have a atc 185,2 atc 200's and a Yamaha 200 electric start and reverse with shaft drive, those are enough wide front tires.
With the long swinger and how it is set up it handles very well and is fun to ride.
You can see it in the one pic that I have a 200x front fender that I trimmed the back smaller and drilled 8 ,1 3/4 inch holes. That helped with cooling alot.

Looks sharp!
My brother has a 81' R and it has the stock front end. It felt like you were leaning forward the whole time. he would try to correct it by leaning back, but he allways wheelied and crashed!
I got lucky also because my bike came with a 85' front end.
Fun, Fast, reliable, and cheap.

I was looking for a pic of this old 250R and came upon my old post. I sold this trike not much after I posted that it was done. I was contacted by the guy I sold this to, and asked if I wanted to buy it back. I have not seen it yet but have agreed to buy it. I know it is not running and has broken fenders now. Needs a clutch lever and a few other small things. My taste has changed over the last 10 years and I have come to really like the wide fronts on these. I may switch this one back if I can find all the parts to do it. This is the only R I have ever sold and now will be getting it back. I will post more details and a pic or 2 when I get it in my shop.

Cool air cooler Ahren. I think you should always run a fatty on the front of an 81-82 too. Looking forward to seeing the new pics. Was the owner a local guy? You know you wouldn't have to do any work on it if you sold it to me!

So are you going to keep the old thread going or start a new rebuild thread?

That is great. Looking forward to seeing what you do to it. I have an '82 that had a skinny front and I am putting it back to a wide front wheel as well.

Looks like I am going to pick it up today. I maybe should just keep this thread alive. Karl, I am probably going to keep all my R's. I kind of regret selling this one in the first place. I wish I could find a couple extra wide frontends I have some plans for a few of them.

Well I have it. A lot rougher than when I sold it. I will take some pics tomorrow and post them up. Some things are not as I remembered them but that is OK I guess.

I am in for the night and I forgot the camera in the shop. I did mess with it a little today though. Felt and sounded like it had a bad reed so I pulled the intake and stuff off and they where fine. The intake gasket was half missing though. I also did a compression test and it only has 60#'s. I will pull it apart tomorrow maybe, and throw a new top end on it. I just got another set of sand paddles on some 4x110 rims so if I get it going I will throw them on and play in the snow some before it's all melted.

I had this top end on the shelf. It is .75 over bore with heavy porting. It was all run in already and just sitting there just waiting for this trike. It is running in all the pics. Runs real nice and has a wild midrange. I left the old tires on it as our snow was melting fast and sand paddles in the mud really make a mess. I was soaked as it was.

The swinger set up is a one off deal I am sure. Look at the pics of the engine from the left side and in the back ground of the compression gauge, see if you can see something strange. Hint, it is not an R swing arm but I am pretty sure it is Honda.

83-85 200x? Looks like the X sprocket hub…

This top end was ported before I got it. Everything on the intake side is opened up. The swing arm is an 84 200x, The frame has been modified to use that swing arm and 200x shock also. Kinda different but it works well. Starts on 2 kicks cold.

did you move the pivot??

did you move the pivot??

I didn't but someone in the early 80's did. The pivot is moved back about 6-7 inches. There is also a modified shock mount to run the 200x shock, That is why it has that custom made air box. The shock mount is where the airbox would be stock.
