a friend of mine has a tri moto 200 that he hasnt been able to get running, so i told him bring it over we will get that thing up and goin again, thinking it would be something simple, like the carb or a spark issue etc. well we didnt mess with it long but its getting fuel to the carb and good bright blue spark, didnt actually check the compression yet, but it deffinetally blows your thumb off the hole so it should fire.. so assuming it would be a problem in the carb i put a squirt of starting fluid down the plug hole just to make sure it fired, and, nothing! tried it twice and not even a sputter...i know the starter fluid evaporates quick so even tho i tried to do it quick it may have evaporated before getting the plug in, cap on and pull, im going to mess with it again later tonight and will try a couple drops gas down the cylinder, or starter fluid through the carb and see what happens, but im thinking the timing may have jumped or valve bent or something.. i did a search on these and didnt come up with to much, everyone just says get a clymer manual, i have the online pdf file but it says i need a timing light etc etc, thats not true is it? could someone please inform me how to check the timing and valves on this? its really a decent trike and i hate to see it sit there unused as it will continue to if i cant get it going..(if you read this thefox, this is your old tri moto). any help is much appreciated....
Check compression and clean the carb. Rule out the most likely first before messing with the timing since it is highly unlikely it jumped time. Also if it has compression it isnt a bent valve.

it deffinetally has enough compression to fire but i will check it to be sure tonight.
will clean the carb as well, but im not sure its a carb issue since it wouldnt fire with the starting fluid, but im thinking the start fluid may have just evaportated to quick, am going to try it through the carb tonight before i do anything, just want to know how to check timing etc so if it does come down to that, i can do it tonight instead of having to come home, post, wait for reply etc...

When you say starter fluid do you mean Eather?.. if so even if it mostly evaporates it will only take a faint amount of fumes to fire up. if you have think you have compression it could be spark timing.

There really isn't a timing adjustment on these. Remove the timing plug by the top of the pull starter and pull the engine over till you can see the "T" mark on the rotor through the timing hole (I usually take the pull starter off and turn it over by hand). When the T make is lined with the notch, the line on the cam gear should be lined with the pointer on the top of the head (you have to take the cover off the left side of the head, 2 bolts hold it on). This will set the ignition timing and the valve timing.
It was a brand new Yamaha carb that I put on but if it has been sitting for long it could need to be cleaned.
If you still need help I could probably come out and take a look at it for you, pm me your phone #.

well checked the timing and it was off, about 30 degrees to the left from where it shoulda been so i had him call up thefox(that was Dan Smith you spoke with andrew, not sure if u know him but hes from nango too and says he knows who you are) anyway fox told him how to adjust the timing so we did and thought for sure that was the problem but still a no-go, checked the compression... 15 psi :wondering ... sure as hell felt like more with the thumb...guess i was wrong..should have just came home and got the compression tester in the first place..
we didnt tare into it, but the top end was just rebuilt not too long ago with high comp wiseco piston by a respectable member here so im lead to beleive its a valve problem... he says hes gonna bring it to a shop but well see what happens....
sorry for wasting everyones time, and thanks for the info...

Ahh, I know Dan.
Yeah 30 degrees would probably be a bent valve. Let me check, I think I have an extra head with good valves I can hook you up with.

that would be great if you did, let me know how much and ill have him(or i can) pick it up... he took the wheeler home with him so ill have to have him bring it back over if you did have one, im sure its in the valves but didnt tare into it, if i took the 2 covers off the top of the head i could clearly tell tho right? thanks again..
