So Jeff (honda250sx) found an add on craigslist the other day for a 350x not far from my house. The 350x being the 3 wheeler I have dreams about, i jumped on it. I noticed the date was from end of august and we are in september and was skeptical but i had nothing to lose. I called the number several times with no luck until I emailed the guy and asked him what was going on. He put up the wrong number and gave me the right one, thus he still hadnt sold it. Called him, went down and looked at it and bought it. He is about 67 years old and the origional owner, bought new. His son used to race it. It has a twist throttle and supertrapp exhaust. Maier superscoops and a CEET tank cover(??). Does anyone know if any of this stuff is rarer?? Like the plates, or the scoops or cover? Came with a basket of extra parts, orig tool kit**, number plates, extra swinger and shock, dead mans switches, tires on rims galore. I have not gone through everything yet. It hadnt run in 4 years and the carb needs cleaned. The pet cock on the tank doesnt work (doesnt turn the fuel off). But it has LOTS of power. On the origional bore still and it is nuts!! Oh yea, and it came with the owners manual and title to. Anyway i will have alot of questions so i hope you guys can help. He wanted 1500 and i talked him down to $900. I think i did ok. Ok here are the pics... THere are alot because i know we like pics...

I need a new petcock and carb kit. Starts right up though but pisses massive amounts of fuel. Prior to recent it hadnt run in quite a few years. Starts on first kick though....

Here is a video of the carb problem . The petcock dumps out fuel when in the closed position and thus the carb pisses. however i think that if the float wasnt stuck (im assuming stuck) it wouldnt pee all over so i think its a combination of two things here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piGsEuMX7Ak

p.s. i gotta kick this thing harder.

*Edit* i just found wheel spacers in one of the baskets...

carb rebuild for sure, my 85 r petcock does that to. it has gas flowing in res/on/off positions.

But would that make a difference in terms of it pissing fuel or is the petcock irrelevant here?

Thanks! I had been wanting one since i was 18 and im 24 now. It came up by my house and i saw the fact that it had papers and all sorts of extras and oem rear fenders so i jumped on it. Finding out its an old racer was a bonus. Your time will come. Or you just have to be willing to drive a little

Ok guys i have a carb issue. If you looked at the pics and saw the video i posted yesterday she wouldnt idle and was pissing fuel. I blew out the needle and seat and cleaned out the bottom of the carb and no more fuel leaks..DONE! (still have a shindy rebuilt kit on the way) Now i put it back togeather and she runs but still has the idling problem. It starts on choke and runs fast on choke but as the engine warms and i slowly bring the choke off the idle drops and when i get the choke completely off she dies. She caughs alot to. She will run on half choke but caughs the whole time. I adjusted the mixeture to 2.5 turns as per the manual. Any other ideas. Please watch the newest video i made. Im thinking she is lean:confused:  Also here are some pics of some wheel spacers i found in the boxes of parts...

It is. I have just never seen another one and was wondering if it was worth anything?

Does anyone have any carb advise here?!

Did you try turning the idle screw in on the side of the carb to get it to idle a little higher? Also, you could try adjusting it from the cable, either on the thumber, or more likely at the top of the carburetor cap, under the rubber boot (if its there) Loosen the cable locknut, lower one, and turn the above threaded part out to make her run a little faster. Remember to have the enging running so you can see where your at. Good luck!

I think though that she is running lean verusus more of an idling screw problem. If she runs with choke and when she comes off of choke then dies i think she is running lean. Also if it was just an idle problem how would that explain the coughing yakno? Not being mean just thinking outloud. Appreciate the thoughts though.

BigHenault I am not looking to sell anything at the moment. But when i do decide to see i will be posting in the classifieds.

I guess you could start then by checking the intake manifold that attaches from the carb to head for cracks. Start the engine, and spray starting fluid around the boot, and around the head. If the motor revs slightly when you spray a certain spot, you may have an air leak. Another thing that comes to mind is the exhaust. Is is clogged with a mouse nest or somthing, or does it have good flow? Air fliter clean? Next, are you sure the jets in the carburetor are stock, or did someone monkey with them, and needle in the right setting in slide? You may want to clean the carburetor again, as you may have a partial clog. I usually run a fine piece of wire through all the jets, as well as carb cleaner and compressed air. A strand of wire off an old clutch or throttle cable works great. Is there a in line fuel filter on your gas line? Check that the gas cap is venting properly too. Good luck, and hope I can give you a few pointers if nothing else.

Yes they are. I cant stop staring at it. I just go out to the garage and just stare at it. I love it! I have wanted one for so long. Just gotta get the carb rebuilt and clean up the rest of the stuff. Then start saving for a frame off. I cant believe the power this thing has. I just crack the throttle and the front end goes up. I am having some problem getting used to the tranny. I cant ever seem to find neutral...

I'd take the carb off and give it a good cleaning, make sure to get all the jets out and verify that the small orifices are all clear. Not sure how long it was run without the filter but even the smallest bit of dirt could plug up a jet or sit in the needle and seat of the float. Dump the gas from the tank and start with fresh fuel and a clean tank and petcock, old crappy fuel (even a few weeks old anymore)and rust/water won't help . Clean that K&N and re-oil and put it back on and then see where the jetting sits. You can't start playing with jetting till you get the rest taken care of, clean fuel and clean air. With that you'll have a good base to start from.

Ross,
Yes i did that when i first got it because she was streaming fuel. I blew out the needle and seat and sprayed some carb cleaner in her. That took care of the problem but didnt fix the idleing problem. However I just walked in the house and found this!! Hopefully i will have an update later tonite. Hopefully this wont take to long. Never done a 3 wheeler carb before so i might need some help later..

p.s. people are always saying to clean the screen on the petcock. I have tried to unscrew it in various areas but maybe im doing it wrong?? Also would a clogged filter make it so that the Off/On/Res doent work. It flows in all positions.

Vealmonkey
09-12-2009, 06:29 PM
The part inside the petcock that directs the flow of fuel has probably busted so it won't turn anymore. You might have to find you another petcock that works.

So i finished rebuilding the carb about 2 hours ago and got her running. Put in a new plug and she fired on first kick. Couldnt believe it. Running on her own power now! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFziWikIy5M&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eyoutube%2Ecom%2Fuser%2Frpm overload&feature=player_profilepage

However I have 2 questions. I have a few parts left over that im not sure where they go. One of them is this. I believe it to be #4 the needle get vavle but if thats the case i have no idea how to get it out??? Also which was does it go in, has 2 different ends.

dude, thats a sweet find also, I was a little jelous when you found this, but now I feel better after scoring that 86. Its awsome there are nice trikes like that hiding right here in NY. Lovin the tank skin, back in the day my dads 85 had that same cover, ive only seen a few survivors, cool rare item!! We gotta try and get together and rip em, how far from albany are you?

Yamaha_Rules69
09-18-2009, 11:05 AM
The jet needle has to sit in that piece. There should be only one way it can go in. If you put the slide on the top, and look at the bottom, you will see the jet needle sticking down. That is where you install that piece #4 you have in your hand. It is easier to get the idea which way it goes if you already have the slide in place, and bottom of carb off, so you can see. Did the carburetor have this piece before, is it still in, or is it missing? If this piece is missing, the needle would be sloppy, and it would run REALLY rich and crappy. Good luck, and hope I am pointing you in the right direction.

Yamaha - thanks for the tip. I will try it again and see what happens. It currently does have one in but i wasnt sure how to get it out; let alone install it. Does it pop out?

Aldochina - LOL yes i have wanted a 350x since i was 18 and was on craigslist and ebay everyday looking at all the nice ones that pop up in florida and the like. Then my friend jeff saw this and told me asap and here it is. I just saw yours and DAAAAMN i am actually jealous because i wanted an 86, i like the colors better. we can trade :) Anyhow mine was found 6 miles away and the guy delivered it. Orig owner. I could go on and on. But from albany i think about 6 or 8 hrs. I live right by niagara falls. bout 10 minutes away. You have lots of area to ride? I would LOVE to go riding, 2 nice 350x's would be a great sight lol. p.s. go get yours registered!! I got mine done. Also i gotta post up some new pics. Since that tank cover has been on its whole life the tank is MINT!!

aldochina
09-18-2009, 01:09 PM
that sucks, your about as far away as one can be in the same state! oh well, maybe someday, i bet that tank is mint. Was there some kind of clear protectant pieces on the tank, couldnt tell in the pic. Ridng sucks here local, but if you load up and drive 30 min or so theres some good spots. For the registration, what exactly did they require, and how much? thanks

userj8670
09-18-2009, 02:43 PM
I dont mind driving :) The tank had the cover on it then foam to protect the tank and then he taped over the whole tank. So i put lighter fluid all over the tape to make it easier to peel and a coat of mothers wax and wowza. As to insurance i will get back to you on that. Im working out mine with my insuracne agent. The previous owner had plates on it and said it cost $10 all i need it my card that has the title on it, go the dmv (Assuming the insurance will register it. Tell them its a atv not 3 wheeler) and show proof of owner ship and thats it. did you get that x running yet? I cant believe the balls these things have. Barely crack the throttle and it stands up

Yeah he is south of rochester a good 30-40 minutes. He doesn't make it on the boards as much as he used to so pm or email (better) works to contact. He mentioned a just a little while ago that we needed to get a ride in soon, I should figure out when I can make it and give him a call tomorrow.
