Wondering if someone can give me some insight on this problem. I am having trouble with the electric starter making a clunking noise when I spin it. But when I use the electric starter with the decompression lever lifted no more clunking. It is hard to start with the rope unless I have the lever lifted also. I haven't had this trike very long and it had no battery when I bought it so I didn't know about this problem. Could it be really high compression or something like that?
Here are a few things I have done to it with no change:
1.Changed one way clutch (got rid of another problem)
2.adjusted valves
3.Took left cover off no missing teeth on the starter gears
4.Bench tested the starter it (works good)
I have read for hours on here trying to find a post with a similar problem but can't
really find one. Any help would be appreciated.

That lever is a compression release. It should be harder to pull when you don't use the lever. For your electic start I don't know mine doesn't clunk. Does it start with the electric starter.

It will start with the electric start just wanted to get rid of the clunking before I wreck anything. Also if I remove the spark plug and turn it over the clunking is gone then.

could it be that the shafter on the starter is gouged slightly? Pressure turning the gear forces it to the side, and clunk clunk?

With no compression (pulling the decomp lever or removing the plug), it might spin just fine as it doesn't have force pulling on the shaft.

Prolly wrong, but its the first thing that popped in my head.

Actually just bought one of these over the weekend.

when theres compression theres almost like a springy kickback to it. when theres none it spins more freely. i have the same problem on my yammy 225dxk. doesent seem to be causing any problems as sofar. i think the clunk could just be your started gear getting jerked around when theres compression.

I thought for sure one of the gears would be missing teeth when I opened it up. I tried a different starter off another trike that I have so I don't think there is a problem with it. I am interested to know what the compression actually is on this one. I will check it tonight I guess.

My 200es makes a knocking noise at idle sometimes, sounds like its from the starter but goes away at any rpm higher then idle and isn't consistent. But my starter is nice and quiet.
