"NEW" BIG RED cold start procedure

Just picked up a 1985 250es BIG RED last night. I haven't had time to tinker on it much yet. I rode it of course before I bought it but the first thing I did was feel the exhaust pipe and it was warm.....hmm.........

It started (electric & kick) & ran GREAT BUT, yeah he was nice enough to have it warm for me when I got there LOL !!!!!

I got it home and have only moved it around a bit a tried a few times to start it but it seems cold natured. I got it to start by sliding the choke lever all the way to the left BUT I had to hold it there ????? It's slides back to OFF like it's spring loaded??

Is there a trick to this choke lever or do I have a binding choke cable ??? As stated, I had to "hold" the choke on. If I let off it would either die, or die if I gave it any throttle......I'm sure it's choke related, does this model have a fuel enricher valve or a true choke ????? I will finally get to tinker tomorrow after work, and.....

oh yah, I actually traded for this trike but it wasn't an XBOX 360, it was a Fender Strat & acoustic, LOL, so there !!!! :beer

They are spring loaded on the 250ES... Its a slide valve style of choke, and expensive to replace... Be glad yours moves freely....

You can buy a whole choke replacement kit. Its not expensive. I bought one for my SX. I also have a cold start kit.

I know where there are a few forsale as well.

OK thx, so they are spring loaded, does that mean I do have to "hold the choke on" until the bike warms up ?? Is that normal to have to hold it and the start button to start it cold ??? I'll get some time after work today to play, just wanna what normal is. Hey thanks again...pictures today after work.

I thought there was a tiny groove in that plastic slide itself that allowed it to "lock" in place?? Pretty sure I had an 87 SX switch that had that setup because my 85 SX wouldn't stay put......
