84 250r problems

Just got a 84 250r and I cannot get it to go into gear. You can hear it shift but you can still roll the rear tires and it doesn't grab. Anybody have this before?

Have you ever seen it run under its own power? Maybe it is a problem with the clutch?

no i have not seen it run at all.

when you pull the clutch lever does it have any resistance at all? if it makes that click noise when you normally put it into gear but its not moving sounds like the clutch is stuck open.

you hear the gears click together but the chain doesnt move and there is very little resistance on the clutch

Lets hope it's just the clutch, but in case it seems like a GEAR ISSUE after you check out the clutch: Do not assume it's a "split cases" issue..........

MANY times it is merely an issue of how the external shift mechanism works, which is usually located under the right or clutch cover.

Some models, even the 350X, have this shift drum pawl, ring, spring shifter plate etc etc etc located on the left side.

Sometimes you have to pull the clutch basket to see whats up. Read the manual, drain the oil, remove the correct cover and have someone roll the rear tires while it's on a stand while he shifts and you watch what happens at Mr. Shift Drum. Sometimes I remove every single piece and just turn the drum with a pair of pliers to make sure that the inside "goodies" are all set. You must roll the tires or shifting will be sticky at best.

Last - everyone needs to stop copying my advice just so they can sould like a mechanic :lol: J/K, maybe a little bit serious though :D
