If you go to http://www.3wheelerworld.com/SMYamaha.shtml and look at the 1983 YT175k servive pdf and look at the clutch exploded view there is a plate marked #20 that is the clutch plate we are talking about.

On an 83 yt175, there is an extra clutch plate inserted into the clutch packs. Now just because it is listed as a clutch plate, it's not like the standard steel plated. All this plate is, is a round, flat steel plate that is neither notched for the inside teeth of the clutch basket nor is it notched to clear the spring for the out part of the clutch basket. It's just a ring that is the same width of the clutch plates. The great gazoo has one in the clutch assembly in his yt175. Without this ring the trikes clutch would slip something terrible. If you didn't have this ring and just added a clutch plate and a clutch fiber or just added a clutch plate that has the spring notches in it, Either the trike wouldn't shift or the clutch assembly would pop the retaining ring out of it's groove on the inside of the clutch basket. I have no idea why yamaha changed this and have never seen anything written about it. The extra piece came in an engine that was in my 82 yt175 clutch assembly and when we put it back in gazoos clutch assembly, the crazy thing didn't slilp and shifted normally. I looked to see if I had any more, and I don't. I've never seen one new, and it's the only transmission I've ever seen one in. Both gazoo and I were baffled by it's presence and we put all new clutch fibers and plates in his clutch assembly and were stumped why his clutch was slipping until we pulled apart all his old clutch plates and fibers and noticed this smooth circular clutch plates presence. Once we added this to the clutch pack, all was fine. Go figure. I thought we had done something wrong with the clutch and this was some sort of rigged up hack job, but I had noticed it in the 83 microfiche pictures also. If anyone knows why this is, please elaborate. All I know is that it was the only thing that made this clutch assembly work properly.

Im sure if there was an 84 YT 175, it would also have the same setup as the 83. My guess would be that the 82 175 was more closely designed to the earlier 125's from 80-81, but still they didnt have that plate. The 82 175 shares the same "smaller" reed block design on the jug as the older 125's, but the 83 175 used the same as the 82-85 Yt 175 and a larger, better design. That plate has to be an upgrade, as the 82 175 has only 7 steel plates, and the 83 175 has 8 steels. Hopefully this guy can find this part or figure somthing out!!!!!

Maybe I should have written that the plate in question appeared to be the same thickness as the clutch steels, but that neither the gazoo or I took a micrometer to the plate to check the thickness. Sorry if that caused anyone any confusion. You would have to contact the great gazoo to see if he would take his clutch apart to get the measurement. With all the fits we had with his clutch and all the times we had it apart and back in, I don't think he will be too enthusiastic to pull it apart again.

Have you found your plate yet? I would suggest that you start calling yamaha dealers and asking if they have it in stock. You may get lucky.
