Picked this up last week for $300 Came with the original motor, kicker gears are shot as expected, I got it to run but it ran horrible. Took it out today and checked it over, the 200x motor is going to need at least a camshaft, timing chain, rockers, seals, kicker gears and a gasket. After a lot of thinking I'm going to do a AutoX. Here are the pictures when I got it home and now. My 185s snuck into a picture. I will update this thread as I work on the bike.

No tears in the seat, and excellent plastics, Thats why I don't want to part it out. I figured I can make it an autoX and then when I have the money I will evently rebuild the original motor.

Nice scores, Geez wish I could find that kind of a deal close to home (I'm assuming you didn't have to go far).

I'm 2hrs from a major population zone. :(

Best thing is Glamis is only 30 min away.:w00t:

Sure would like another AutoX. Sure hard to beat with the young ones... :Bounce

i can pay for shipping! it's only like $40-$50 for the compelte motor!

if you swap, use the harness off the bile who's motor you use and their electronics. will make it much easier.

zppeacock
08-24-2009, 08:41 PM
Why will it make it much easer, from what Ive read its just extending some wires and just pluggign them in.

AutoXer
08-25-2009, 08:38 AM
Some of the plugs are different ... I used the 185 stuff on both of my auto-x's . On one of them I also had to space the left foot peg to clear the shift shaft. The brake off the 185 will work good also with a little more bend in it

oscarmayer
08-25-2009, 09:12 AM
^+1 that's why. also the ehadlight is different, your going to either have to ge a rickystator upgraded stator or downgrade the headlight element to the 200e/s/es/m one because the 200x has a higher amp bult assembly.

zppeacock
08-25-2009, 10:49 AM
From what I read you just need to extend some wires add new ends to them and they will just plug into the 200x harness. I'm going to space the pegs out a little with washers and use a 350x rear brake lever and fab up the linkage.

I read the wiring from autox artical that someone posted out of a mag.

Will anything bad happen if I don't change the stator or headlight?

AutoXer

I used the front harness off the X so I could retain the head light and kill switch from the X

Yamaha_Rules69
08-25-2009, 04:39 PM
In my auto X I use the stock headlight from the 200x, and it works just fine. I havent had any issues in the last 8 years I have owned it. I like the auto X, and it is a great trail machine, and easy for anyone to drive. In a drag race or climbing hills though, the 200x would beat the hell out of it. The clutches seem to wear and slip faster on the 185/200 than the 200x stock motor. But all in all a great machine. Good luck!

oscarmayer
08-25-2009, 04:48 PM
^ ok good to know it was always stated before that using the 200x headlamp will burnt he 200s stator out. sweet! so sounds liek it's not a problem good! i'm about to do an autox myself.

Awesome. good to know someone else has left it. Just got to get a few more parts and I should be set to start building.

Mine took a few hours to build. I had an old 185 wiring harness that I bought in a box of parts off ebay for $10, so I used the plug from that to wire into the 200x to keep the 200x harness intact.
We took the clutch/parking brake apart and removed the spring from the handle that made the lock out button pop up, so the lever works the rear brake and kept the parking brake.
I made a steel bushing and used a 60mm grade 8.8 bolt & washer to bolt a 200s foot brake lever to the right upper foot peg bolt, then used a piece of 3/16" flat bar to bend in a "U" shape and bolt the foot lever to the stock lever. (someone posted pictures of this that I copied).
Works great, rear brake on handlebar and foot lever along with a parking brake.

So you think it's better to use the end of a 185s harness insted of cutting the plug off the new motor and extending the wires and putting connectors to the 200x plugs.

gizmo_22
08-26-2009, 01:04 PM
the 185 harness is long enough to be wired in on an autox. Thats what I used on mine and have no issues and it keeps your stock 200x harness intact if you ever decide to put the original engine in the frame. The only thing i changed was the start/kill switch so i wouldn't have to hack the wiring. If you have a stock headlight on it the 185s headlight is a 45/45 watt bulb. where the x is 65/65 if i remember right so you might want to change out the light or you'll have a super dim light going down the trail.

zppeacock
08-26-2009, 01:12 PM
Thanks. I might have to look for a harness. From what a few people have told me the 2 wires coming from the cdi need to be extended and then they will plug into the x harness. And the plug coming out of the stator on the 185s you cut off ( or I could take the plug off a harness) and extend 2 of those wires and plug them in to the x harness, but there is a third wire in that plug that's green and just gets grounded? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

RapidRick
08-26-2009, 11:10 PM
IF, I remember correctly that's that worked for me.

zppeacock
08-26-2009, 11:14 PM
The extending wires or the 185s harness?

gizmo_22
08-27-2009, 02:13 AM
have a look at the pdf file MonroeMike linked on the first page, it covers the wiring issue if you want to use the 200x harness. But as was stated earlier the x's headlight will be dim unless you swap the lighting coil behind the flywheel. Other then that who needs a light for riding in daylight :P

zppeacock
08-29-2009, 11:00 PM
Thanks, read that artical. For the people that Have built these where did you put the green wire that is coming out of the stator? Just grounded to the case?

AutoXer
08-30-2009, 06:11 PM
2 wires come from the stator they plug in to the harness

zppeacock

There is 3 wires that come from the stator on the 185s motor that im putting in. There is a yellow and black/red which I know where they go and there is also a green that from what I read gets grounded to the case???

I know these won't let it slide well. I don't really do much sliding other than in the mud or snow. I've got a set of kenda scorpions that I'm going to put on the Honda rims and use them In the summer.

I'm still waiting on the exhaust and recoil. I still need to bolt the motor in, attach the intake, wire the motor, install exhaust, chain, tires, bend rear brake, and get a shifter working. Then itshould be done.

Sure Heres what you need.

Washers to space the foot pedal out ( I used 4 on each bolt)
350x Rear Brake Pedal (Its gotta get bent)
1 of 8131411 --threaded rod
2 of 7321400 --ball joint

Both of the last parts are napa part numbers, I ordered them online from napa. Then you just need to cut the rod down and add some lock washer and 2 nuts for the ball joints.

Only had one issue with the exhaust, It keeps on falling down. One of the mounts were the grab bar bolts to has a broke tap in it from the PR. And thats where the stock muffler mounts
