View Full Version : Who started with the worst rebuild candidate?

Alright, lets see who used the worst possible candidate for their rebuild. I am talking about trikes that were not even worth parting out and got the full frame off rebuild. I'll start us off. I just picked up this 1986 250sx and am currently stripping it down to do a full rebuild. I've already got a 350x front end for it and I'll weld stops on the neck when i get the frame totally stripped. Yes, that is a golf cart front tire.

The only thing left that was part of the bike when I bought it is the frame.

i have a literally junkyard trike as in frame and wheels with rotten tires and no plastics, that I restored and sold off to a guy.

This is prolly about the worst chasis that I ever did a restoration on ,as far as being a mostly complete machine to begin with.It was an '83 ATC 185S and here's a couple pic's immediatley after unloading it off the truck.http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo64/sandpuppi101/hondaatc_0765.jpg http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo64/sandpuppi101/hondaatc_0766.jpg here's the before....

And here's a couple pic's of the after.Like I said it was an '83 185S ,not one of Honda's biggest seller's back in the day I'm sure but it was a cool trike to restore and was sold to a collector down in Cleveland. I remember when I did that machine I put on every Hondaline accessory that I could get for it at the time. Now don't get me wrong about this but I enjoy seeing an old '83 185S or a nicely restored plain jane orange/red ATC 185 all dolled up rather than the same 250R's and 350X's alot of the time.I just don't think those machine's get the apprecaition that they should alot of the time.I'm not saying that I don't like the other machine's any less I just don't think they get the same attention. You guy's know what I'm getting at...

I think its looks awesome and came a long way sandpuppi. It truely is hard to believe how you and others here get these machines to turn out so clean.

I've had a few of those 185s models in my time, I like them also, they are just a little bit too small to be my daily rider. I sold my last 185s about a year ago. The 250sx I just picked up ( the one at the beginning of the thread ) actually runs great. The motor is strong and tight with no smoke, doesn't look like a bolt has ever been turned on the engine. I stripped the entire machine this morning and when I got the swing arm off I pulled the driveshaft out and it looked great, no water intrusion and the area where the seal runs on the driveshaft down by the pinion gear has virtually no wear on it. the oil in the diff looked great also. the tank has no dents in it, however it looks like someone left the gas cap off and it filled with water because i have never seen so much rust in a tank but there are not any rust through spots anywhere on it.

On the Trail-pro's,Whew!! I deserve whatever scolding I get for them tire's.. Ya know~When I look at a pic of anything i'm alway's looking in the background see what is in the back of the pic I guess you could say,and when I look at the pic of the machine restored I seem to find that those tire's(the trail-pros),those are the only major thing's that catch my eye..LOL~ I don't know why you people love those tire's that much:lol:  Thank's for the compliment guy's,I know alot of us enjoy bringing them back and that's awesome too see .

When I first went and looked at the 250sx I had but one concern on my mind, and that was to make sure it was mechanically sound. The motor ran great with no smoke, the kickstart grabbed every time and felt solid, and I checked the oil in the rear end for water, the oil in the rear end had no water in it and I could tell it had not been recently changed just to hide a problem. I wanted something that was a solid foundation for a restore/rebuild and thats what this one is. I didn't care about the fenders, seat cover or fuel tank paint because all that stuff was going to be replaced any way with brand new. I've got it stripped to the frame right now and I added my steering stops for the 350x front end I have for it ( another reason I didn't care about the front golf cart tire, 350x forks are getting a new tire/rim combo any way). When it's done I figure i will have bought the following for it: new fenders front and rear, 350x front tire, rim and hub combo, piece of vinyl for seat, red kote or por15 and new paint job for the fuel tank, carb kit, choke and throttle cables, swing arm boot, new petcock valve, and a decal set. I am going to start sandblasting the frame today. hopefully i won't run int too many surprises.

It's good that you're optimistic, but you can always count on surprises!

sorry its hard to see. but this is the only picture i have of my 200x when i fisrt got it. the front of it was backed over by a tractor trailor in my dads freinds yard(the original owner) and then it was pushed of to the side. so the truck destroyed everything fron the gas tank up and bent the axel. then sitting the sun killed the seat and plastics.. for a good comparison it looked prettymuch like sandpuppis but in 200x form lol
but cleaned the carb and some fresh fuel and the engine started in 2 kicks : ) and somehow the fram survived the truck incident with only the steering stop beeing all bent up.

here it is now...still needs some cosmetic love but that will come as soon as money permits. and cosmetic is all thats left
http://i568.photobucket.com/albums/ss123/rednecks200x/000_0014.jpg
ps. i got the bike when i was 14...and im 18 now.so it had a couple years of getting just what it needed to be ridden and i beat the crap out of it. i rode it with that bent axel right up until the motor gave a huff then it sat in my back yard for a year befor my interest really kicked back up and i decided to rebuild it...i lost interest due to a gf that has now come and gone so im back dumpin money into it like i shoulda done the first time haha

I have a candidate. I bought an 85 250R and it came with a 1986 parts bike. Bent frame, bent swingarm. bent axel, smashed casing and generally dead. Well here it is today.....
