what years?? I think that the 86/87 t3 is the better than all r's. But the 84/85 are horrable.

it's kind of hard to vote because the 84 and 85 250r are not really the same.

It should be 83-84 250R, and 84-85 tecate. If those were the choices, I would deffinatly choose the tecate. I mean look at all the diffrances. Liquid cooling compared to air cooling for one. The tecate was better than the earlier 250R's, but when the 85-86 R's came out, the 84-85 tecate didnt even compare!

83/84R for me.

My stock 83R had better suspension than the 84/85 tecates quicker engine. I would lose the holeshot sometimes and pass T3s in the technical stuff.

anybody with the guts to pin the throttle back and hold it on a tecate will tell you they ruled: .....................TECATE!

I pick the 250r, better suspension and wont break down every 2 seconds. Also because its a Honda and the tecate is Kawasaki. Kaw. is known for parts going out.

Who ever said Kawasaki Tecates werent reliable? Mine was savagly beaten by the past owner, and looked like a pile of junk when I first picked it up, but guess what.... it started on the FIRST kick. Just about every time, it starts right up. The only reason that some parts are out on mine is because it has been rolled a dozen times. The guy who had it must not have given a crap about it, and trashed it to hell. Well now its in my hands, and I plan on restoring it to the machine that it should be. A Honda killer. LOL. lol

Idk I think it would be a really really close battle if it was 85/86 r and 85/86 tecate. But i think im gonna have to go with the rs on this one. And ive pinned a 86 tecate to the handle bar and held on. You go for a hell of a ride but I held on the same with and 86 r ive had both :D

HA HA HA! Boy, ain't you the everyday average comedian? :D I think the only reason why the 250R and the T3 are so much better, they had alot more time to play with there machines and make them good. Look, 250R started in 81, T3 started in 84, and the Tri-Z started in 85. Honda had a total of 5 years to refine there machine, Kawi had 2, and Yamaha only had 1.

sorry but your wrong on this. Yamaha first introduced the TRI-Z to the pubic in sept of 83. they started working on it in late 82 early 83. they had plenty of time. they even introduced it prematurely then recalled it and then released it as a 85. you have to remember back in the 80's KX 250's and CR 250's ruled and the YZ 250 was way in the back. it was a dog. thats were the term Yamadog came from.

Yep! your right SSJ3Goku, Honda was first then it took everybody else out there 3 to 5 years to finely figure out how Honda built such an awsome machine and then they went by the blue prints that the 3 wheeler Gods (Honda) made and tried to rip them off LMAO.... But guess what, Its all true.

Oh ok see this I did not know, I thought that since the Z came out in 85, they hadn't been working on it for years and years since like 82. Thanks for correcting me.

Yes...the Tri-Z was also originally equipped with a POWERVALVE cylinder off of a YZ, but obviously that didn't make it into the final version. The Yamaha book for the Z even mentions a Powervalve several times, even though there isn't one.

They should have the powervalve cylinder.[/quote]

I believe this picture appeared in an ATV mag shootout issue in 86?

Someone here has to know the webpage that has the comparison of the three 250s and will be kind enough to post it for all to read again.

They started in 82 ha, maybe thats why the tri-z stayed yellow longer than the yz line. I personally love the yellow yamahas.

Whats that supposed to mean?

Jeb

He means exactly what he said.

In the mid 80's Yamaha YZ's in the US switched from a yellow and black color scheme in 84 to a White & Red scheme in 85. YZ's over-seas were red & white before 84.

The 85 Z was kept yellow and black even though the 85 YZ's were red & white. Until the special edition red and black Z came out.

I too love the old yellow and black yamahas! I recently saw a late model YZ with yellow plastic, black seat, and a graphics package that looked like the old black and white "film strip" looking stripe that yamaha used in the early 80s. It was pretty cool!
