i'll have pics up later. it's rough. engine was opened and left outside for 7 years so it's trash, lots of "surface" rust on placs but not deep rust so the roller is saveable. has adjustable rear suspension, and other goodies. alloy gold wheels all the way around in decent shape.
I paid $80 for it.
questions I have are, is it worth rebuilding it, or should I part it off? if I kepe it, how much will a good runnign repalcement engine cost? can I drop in a 200e or 300trx engine into it? ;)
jsut some ideas but I'm not that fimular with what can be done with these frames outside of stocker stuff and typually I have only done top end and clutchs on them so I'm at a loss outside of that.

You can build a good fooler engine from ebay parts for next to nothing. You won't have any trouble saving this one if you really wanna. Good luck. :beer

^ bottom end is totally seased as in locked solid. where can I get a good bottom end? currently ebay has no good bottom ends. the top end i can have sleeved and setup for the next piston size, but that's easy, the bottom end is trashed.
saul., if you get a chance, call me on my cell and help give me some ideas.

Don't you DARE attempt to put in a big giant heavy thumper motor in there!
Air coolers are just fine and PLENTY of parts out there. The motor couldn't be any simpler and easier to work on either (although, you may change that :D shens)
Sweet, I look forward to the questions and the seized cylinder
Cheapy cheap, how can ya beat it!!
Dont part it. these are the simplest machines ever and parts are readily available. I dont think i have anything left for the 83-84. But i will take a look and see if i can hunt anything down to help you out.

sweet thanks barry.
edog, it's got 400hp to the wheels. if you know anything about subaru's the hood scoop it actually a required item as it has a top mounted intercooler that gforces air thorugh upo and it sits right udner that scoop. the spoiler helps kepe the tail end down in high speed cornering and sliding. hence it's ralley car roots.

imho, it all depends on what you want and most of all your budget. If you want to do a project and spend $1000+ in parts go for it. If you really just want a decent airfooler for a decent price keep looking there out there for much less than you will end up putting into that one.
Good luck either way.

what about the adjustable reat suspension and things, is that factory? It actually has a dial on a canaster for harder or softer setting.
If I can get it ridable for under $450 I'll keep it. Anyone had a good bottom end they want to part with for a good deal?
Mike, i dug through my stuff a bit last night. It appears i have a few rear brake componets and i think i have a complete stock exhaust system buried in the corner of the garage ( i saw part of a silencer back there and i think i remeber putting a set there ). I also have quite a few pieces for an 82 that might cross over. I also have various bolts, small parts etc, that i have no idea where they belong. I have owned prominatley airfoolers so i have tons of stuff that we could probly match up. I thought i still had a nos extended axle and pipe but i forgot i sold those to Rex Cars. I do have a NOS Hondaline Short track Tank sitting up in the closet if you are intrested in going that route. When you put together your parts list forward it to me and i will try to dig up what i can. Then i can partially deliver next time i am in the Dallas area.
I am also working on purchasing the pipe and exteneded axle back if you are intrested.

I bet the transmission/clutches are okay if the crankcase had a little oil left in it, because they are seperated. If it were me and I couldnt find a decent bottom end, I would just split the cases, press out the crank, clean up the cases, and install a new crank, seals, and main bearrings. You could even just buy a used crank, and put a new lower rod bearring and rod in it ($100), and you would know it is going to last, rather to buy a used bottom end and know nothing about it. See what you can do, and keep us informed! You didnt go wrong at all with that deal, I would have done the same thing. For that price you can put a little time and extra money in it to get it the way you want it to be. Good luck!
