1985 Honda Big red 250es help!

Alright, i purchased this big red for $400 bucks. and its been pretty fun so far. There were a few things thast needed to be done before i could put it on my girlfriends horse ranch. I wanted a good, reliable atv or atc to put out there so she could haul hay or whatever. it was missing the airbox lid, got that. needed a air filter, got that. Then it wasw off to fix an oil leak coming from the left side of the engine by the output shaft. Well we took out the output shaft assembly, and found the o-ring missing from the oil control port. A quick trip to Kragens and i bought a pack of 8 o-rings. put a little dap of grease where the o-ring goes and placed it on there. looked in the side of the engine and alligned the gears, (motor completely on the side) alligned the holes on the shaft and tried to slide it in. wiggled it in getting everything on there opened the other side of the engine, holding the idler screw for the kick starter and couldnt get it all the way in! tried about 20 times and still cannot get it in there.... what am i doing wrong. Any help tips or anything you can give me??

You need to split the crankcase to get that all back together. There's a lot parts on the output shaft. You've got shift forks, thrust washers, bushings..... Once you pull the shaft all that stuff gets out of place.
