So I bought a used '85 Honda 200x that didn't run for a couple of hundred dollars....I bought a new head and carb cause the guy said it needed a valve job and I found a used head with fresh valves for cheap. I noticed when I took the cam out that it did not spin freely in the bushing....I took the bushing off and there is a slight rough spot and a slight rough ring around the end of the cam....I was told I could use some wet sand paper (1000 grit) and maybe sand it to where it spins freely.....Have any of you tried this? Or can you recommend I do anything? I don't want to buy a new cam.....Anyone have a spare 200x motor that runs that they want to sell

I've done that several times, you do need to find out why it wasn't oiling though. Did it have silicone on the head or rocker box?

Ok is there a certain grit sand paper to use or anything? I've never done this before on a motor.

There's nothing wrong with using some 320 grit to get it rolling and then some 600 grit emery cloth (with gas or WD40) to smooth it the best you can.
Machining and other options are out there, but not cheap.
Clean it up, smooth it up and bolt the crap together and get a 3 stone brake hone with some lubricant - thats the best way.
I've seen many of those journals beat up, you lose oil pressure and the cam chain is a bit noisier but they still run fine :beer

Ok and should I just focus on the rough spot or go around the whole bushing/cam? I hope to get this thing running asap haha.

I would attack the rough spot, then lightly hone the entire journal.
I think the biggest issue is that the cam chain pulls on it and if the oil level is low or the oil tired, the cam journals suffer.
The XR200 I rebuilt recently, I had about .080 up and down movement. Which makes it impossible to ever get it quiet and the valves tightened up.

So you don't want to buy a cam, but you would buy an engine? That is some funny stuff right there!

Is it safe for me to start the motor without the exhaust? The double sided studs are impossible to get out of my old head.....Anyone know if I can just go to the hardware store and get a couple of bolts that will fit?

Just starting it for a "test fire" wont hurt but dont ride it much like that. You should be able to use some short bolts without any problems.

You'll be fine then, you might wanna keep an eye on anything near the outlet though.

Was the black rubber plug in place on the head camshaft oil gallery??
It plugs a "OEM machined hole" purposely to direct the oil elsewhere.
Thats a very common mistake people make with the heads that get oil delivered up the cylinder studs.....

So I need #17 and I have one in my old head but I don't think there is any way I can get it out......they say it is 6x35 so do you think I could just go to the hardware store and get two normal bolts instead of those studs?

dont bother trying to tune the trike without the exaust. it will change when you get one. i didint realize how much a difference an exaust makes until a couple weeks back when i got mine for the yammy.

Also I just bought a thumb throttle for it since it had a twist throttle and I just can't see how it fits on the handle bar and leave enough space for your hand (only like 4" left on the bar) so can you post pics of your guys handle bar set ups?

I don't know off the top of my head... just bring your head into the hardware. That way you can check the threads... :wondering
