View Full Version : Concept Machine ... Is it worth building?

I dont know if I'm nearing a mid-life chrisis .. but I am nearing the start of building a new machine out of *parts* I have laying around.

I have an early 80's Honda street bike that ran me into the side of a pickup years back... the motor and tranny are still good... I have an extra 185s sitting here (parts machine) with a few too many things missing to easily, or cheaply put back together any time soon.

Well ... the bike is a CM450A (2 speed auto tranny). 1st gear went to 50 mph (plenty of power), 2nd reached speeds no 3 wheeler should go (with me on it).

Is there any good reason why I shouldn't break out an oversized shoe-horn and squeeze the bike motor and tranny onto the 185 body? The tranny is pretty big on the bike, but is built around the frame. I am confident I can make it work on the wheeler.

My only concern .. will I be able to keep the front tire on the ground in the end? I would like to keep this a *rideable* machine... Even thought of taking the 3.5 gallon tank from the bike for a hair more weight?

Any thoughts are welcome.

the time and work you will put into it you could NEVER get it out. personaly i think that it wouldnt be worth it but if you think its feasable to do the go for it.

This trike is definately something i'm going to do. If I dont get it done over the next month or so, i'll get it done over the winter. Looking at everything more closely, It doesnt seem the frame will need much modification, if any.

There is one thing I didnt account for .... The size of the sprocket on the trike vs the size on the motorcycle. It will probably balance out nicely, but it will be interesting hitting the throttle for the 1st time.

Dave with all that muscle in the motor why don't you wait till you have a frame with some suspension...like perhaps on old 350X might work even better.

I was just thinking what good will all that power do on a 185s frame. If that thing is a pre 1983 model then you likely have not front suspenders. I had an 82 185's when I was about 12 and it was a rough ride and did not handle that well.

Just my two cents

Darius ...

I fully agree that a frame with suspension would be MUCH better .. but I dont happen to have one laying around .. nor does anyone I know, and I dont have enough extra cash laying around to go searching too much. One will probably show up a week after the machine is done.

It may be a rough ride, scary ride, but in the end I can say I did it... I will have a smile on my face watching mud fly to test it out.

It will be a good learning process .. if in time a better frame shows up and the gear ratio works well ... I know for a fact a 750 will bolt up to this tranny .. could be the next project.
