Will any other swingarm fit on my 81 250r? I only see 2 81 swingarms on ebay. I emailed both sellers to see if they have cracks. Wondering if I have more options.
How big of a problem is a few tiny cracks on the swingarm? I dont jump much, just average trail riding. Thanks.
Also, if one of you guys has a nice one for sell or trade I would be interested.
Get the swingarm from an 82 so you can convert to rear disc brakes.

Cool, thanks Saul. I have a swingarm off the 81 I blew up, but it has 2 tiny cracks. How safe would it be to use it? Thanks.

I really don't know. Obviously the swingarm will see a lot of stress from even normal riding - but I really can't and won't suggest if it's safe or not. The fact that you have noticed it and is asking tells me maybe it's an issue you should address?
Post a few pics of the cracks - someone may better be able to advice you of what to do much more so then me. All I could suggest is maybe have a local welder touch it up?

I'll pull the one off the old R and clean it up and take some pictures. THe one on my running R has a huge crack, looks like the ass end is about to leave me :s I'll look into getting the one off the busted R welded. Thanks for the ideas.
I have an 82 swinger. pm me an offer

Ok, damn :\ Guess Ill have to ride the 200m till I get a new one. I'm most likely going to get an 82 swinger from barryman. At least Ill have rear disc breaks then. I'm still open to a good 81 swinger though should anyone have one.

I hope you have a good welder to fab up mounts for the master cylinder and rezzy on the frame. The brake pedal is different too. I had a 81 and the drum brakes locked the tires up no problem. Just a FYI most aftermarket swingers for the 81-82 R's took both style brake setups.
Here are the pics of the swinger. I do have some good news and bad news. I have everything to convert over to disc brakes but the rear master cylinder. After getting everything together i noticed the bad news. It has been cracked before and welded. I only saw in this one spot, but it appears it needs to be touched up a bit.

Thanks for the pics and checking it out Barry_Man. I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point. I'll get back with you either way next week. Thanks Again.
Your best bet would be to keep searching for a swinger in better shape. Then if you do end up with an 82 i have the disc brake parts.

Just got off the phone with a guy who says he can repair the red swingarm with a tig welder for $50. Do yall think this would be safe? Is $50 a good price? Thanks.

If you get it welded, it might be a good idea to drill small holes at the ends of all the cracks which should stop them from continuing to elongate. I would think a welded swingarm would be just fine as long as you aren't doing much jumping.

I dunno about that but - if I didn't all ready have a +4 westcoast on my fooler Mr.Kasey there would have one LESS sweet aftermarket swingarm. Hint, Hint!

Didn't notice this thread until now... I wouldn't hesitate to weld up your old one, it doesn't look that bad to me. $50 sounds a bit steep to me though. If the guy does good work then I guess it's not that bad, but it's only gonna take him a few minutes to weld it up.

Got some progress on my swinger. I had been trying to work some deals with a few people. I wound up getting a stock swinger from 81Rmachine with bearings and break assembly for $25 plus shipping!!! Thanks 81Rmachine! Sorry to everyone else that our deals did not go through.
So I sanded it down and primed it today. Thinking tomorrow I'll sand it with 1000 grit, reprimer then put a few coats of paint on. Should I put some clear coat on? Or is that just a waste of time for a swinger?

So I painted today. Looks like arse :( Hoping you guys can tell me what Im doing wrong. I wanted it to look like the one I took off. Did I choose the wrong color/type of paint? Instead of gold it looks mustard colored. And its bumpy and the enamel coat seems to be showing up in some spots as white. Any tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
The one I took off:

Use the same brand primer as the paint so you know their compatible . also if you use enamel and lacquer paints together they dont like each other and thats about what it looks like .

I used the same brand of primer, paint, and enamel. After primer I very lightly saned with 1000 grit. Then I blew it off with compressed air and spray bombed with the gold. The paint had little chunks of glitter looking stuff. Did I need to sand between coats of paint and coats of enamel? Is the paint with the glitter crap whats killing me? Thanks

sounds like you got some bad paint . Take your receipt and the paint back and get a refund .

Really? I thought it was me or me choosing that glittery trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro. Im not so concerned with the money, just the sanding time and the whole not getting to ride my R part.
Anyone else think its the paint and not me? :) Any tips on how to get right from here would be awesome! Thanks

So I bought more paint. This time without the glitter looking "metallic" crap. Just gold. Same brand. Sanded one side down and tried it. Looked good. So I sanded it all down, wiped down with goof-off then paper towels. Sprayed it with primer. Tomorrow I'll sand with 1000 and hit it with the gold. Tip to any would-be edogers out there: DONT USE THE Rustolium "Metallic" with the tricycle on the front. It's crap.
I'll have some more pics tomorrow. Thanks

meh, looks good enough I guess. I know what it takes to do it right now anyway. Maybe next time. Good news is its back on the trike. Ill pick up a 520 master link tomorrow and go for a ride. Had to change out my break drum and sprocket. Both where bent. Ill post a pic of it all together tomorrow.
