Anyone ever see this before? Ran into this lil bugger while trying to remove a wheel hub to clean and re-grease the splines. No cotter pin, just this. Haven't been able to remove it yet.

The other side had a normal cotter pin but also has what looks to be threads for the same kinda 'insert' ..

Anyone?

It looks like you can turn it by using a 1/4" drive socket wrench.

I've never seen that, definitely isn't stock. Something is seriously wrong with the end with the screw thing in it. There isn't enough threads to keep the nut on there, securely. It looks like somebody messed the end badly, cut it flush(way deep too) and re-cut enough threads to barely hold it on. As for it being very hard to remove, something tells me its welded on there. I'd get another axle and nuts, I wouldn't feel safe running that. I'll see if I have a stock axle, is yours a 85 or 86-89? Real easy to tell, 8mm bolts holding the sprocket on is the 85 setup and 10mm 1.5 tapered allen heads w/ 17mm nuts is 86-89.

It's an 86.

It looks like it was threaded to accept a tapered pipe plug (1/8" NPT pipe maybe?) that would expand as it were forced in....

Oh it won't be going back in if I can ever get the bast4rd out! Been soaking it last few days with penetrate lube - just need to find a driver to fit now.

Freaking weird things you see sometimes.

Not a bad setup. Looks better then having a cottor pin there.

have you tried jsut taking a cutoff wheel and cutting the nut? then using a splitter to seperate it? then you should be able to remove it safley and see what the axle looks like.
