Hi again guys. I'm asking for some help or advice on a few things. First off, my 84 tecate runs. Like crap, but it runs. I dont have a air filter or airbox on it. I havent ridden it very long, because I dont want to mess up my carb or engine. Anyways, I'm looking to buy a good filter. I looked in the dennis kirk catalog, and I saw that they have two air filters for the model I have. One is a UNI for 19.99, and the other is a MOOSE for 16.95. Is there any real diffrance in them? I was also wondering if I could just clamp it straight onto the carb, without using the airbox, possibly using a hose clamp? Would it be bad in any way to do this if I can even do it?
Also, I was wondering the gas and oil ratio. Should it run on 50/1 ? Thanx for your help.

For the air filter, it depends on where you ride, if you ride in the dunes or in the sand, you can go with a bolt on airfilter with no airbox, if you ride where there is wet swamps and mud, not a good idea, better to go with a airbox. I would try to find a K & N filter for it if you can. also those UNI and Moose filters are NOT Clamp on's you need a cover over it. You can measure the outside Diamater of your air-in-take side of carb and look up the Universal K & N airfilters they have and you can get the size you need. so it depends on where you ride.
motor wise I dont run 50:1 I like 40:1 it seems to work really good for me. try cleaning out the carb and replace spark plug.

I will measure the intake side of the carb, and be sure I get the right universal size then. I dont ride through a lot of water or mud, mostly dusty or dry conditions. I dont ride when it rains.
Thanks for letting me know that the UNI or Moose filters will not clamp right on before hand. Now I dont have to buy one and not be able to use it. I will try some 50/1 ratio gas for a while, and then try 40/1. I think one of the reasons it runs so rough is because the carb might not be the right one. (its a mikuni) That, and I dont have the right pipe on it at the moment. (home-maid drag pipe) I will be getting a pipe soon. I bought one from someone off this site. )
250rmanfmf, do you personally have the universal filter on one of your machines? How good do they work? Thanx again for the helpful info. )

yes, I do have a unverisal K & N on my Drag ATC 85 250r, it sucks up a lot more air than if you had a airbox. but make sure when you order one, they make different ones with different degree angles. like, lets say where your carb ends, if you had to put a Straight unverisal airfilter on it, would it hit the frame? they make different angles so you can avoid it, unforunatly in my case with my 85 250r I had to buy a piece of radiator hose to connect to the carb and bypass the frame and rear shock. but the 84-85 tecates you should be fine with a straight or 40 degree unverisal. if you need to find one I can let you know some sites that carry them.

PS-Personally I am glad you are going away from UNI and MOOSE, I think K & N Is much better. You pay for what you get. also when you order the filter, dont forget to get the outterware.
I have a UNI Pod filter (that tecatecrazy spoke of) on my Tri-Z. The POD is exactly what you want for now. They are good filters and cheap. I use UNI stock replacement filters in my 86 Tecate.

You might want to get the water repellant outerwears cover for the UNI Pod. You can probably get both the POD filter and the cover cheaper than a K&N clamp on.
If you use good synthetic oil, you should have no problems at 50:1 in your KXT.

I dont know if I will need a diffrent frame yet, tecate crazy. I'll have to see how the exhaust mounts on. If it dosent fit on, I'll probly take that one from you. Do you have a grab bar you would sell? How do they bolt on? I think I may be missing that part of my frame, but maybe not. ? Thanx.

my friends tecate has a k&n clamped right to his carb so i knwo k&n makes them i just dont know what kind it is and in my t3 i run 32:1 it will foul plugs if you putt too much but the bottom end loves the extra oil :D
84-85 tecate's are notorius for breaking the frame right where the fenders bolt on behind the mounts so if it is broken you will need to find the part i knwo out of all my friends (all have 84-85 t3's) 3/4 of our grab bars have broken off and needed welding back on (i am the only one without a broken one) but mine is getting ready to break cus i can see where it has stretched and cracked the paint :?
