Looks like its time to replace the cam chain on my 84 Big Red........ tried the adjustment bolt on top of the case and it didn't seem to help, heck I think its even noisier now, lol. Heres my question: Is it necessary to rplace the cam chain sprockets as well.....?? Anything else? Thanks guys.

did you loosen the adjustment bolt when engine was idling .if so and it sill makes a clicking noise then you will need new cam chain, both guides, and you'll have to look and see if the sprocket is worn ,if so then your going to need it aswell.

Thanks for the info bro........ yep, I did the adjustment with the engine idling. Then shut the motor off and tried the trick Howdy mentioned awhile back...... took the 10mm bolt off and checked to see if the tensioner was locked up by pressing against the tensioner with a nail. Tensioner has plenty of spring though. Guess its time to open it up....... hopefully the sprockets look decent. Are the guide(s?) tough to replace or get to? Take it easy.

The guides are easy to replace, the chain isn't to bad to do, it can be a PITA tho....

the head has to come off to replace the guide. The pivot is between the head and jug. Good time to do the top end

Thanks for the input guys........ ordered all the parts yesterday. Not sure how deep I'll be getting into it :wondering , if I can get by with just slipping in a new chain I might go that route for now and save the complete rebuild for the winter months. Thanks again.

Well your gonna have the top-end off too do this rite so I'd at least do the topend rebuild while you're in there. My thought's are that the guide's are cracked and your loosing tension there plus the cam chain is prolly an issue also. For less than 150.00 you can rering it ,and do the complete topend, and check the valve's also,at least put in new seal's which you'll get in the topend kit,but you'll need a complete gasket kit for the left side case also. You should be able to do that job in about 4 hour's.. Good luck with it.
