Yamaha 225 stuck in 3rd. gear

Help! T ( oday I was ridding my 84 (yellow) ytm 225 and when I started to down shift 5th on down to N my ride stuck in 3rd gear I think. The shifter lever is now lower than normal and won't let me shift up or down. There were no unusual noises when this happened I wasn't abusing it just a cruise down the road . Does anyone know what might happened, what it will cost to fix?

My dad's Yamaha 200 did the same thing a few years ago. We were riding and he downshifted into 1st and then it wouldn't shift, up or down. It turned out to be his shift fork shaft that is in the trany. The shaft bent just enough to keep the forks from sliding up and down it. The shaft cost $10 from Yamaha (plus gasket kit) but that meant that we had to take apart the whole engine.
