I've got an '85 200m with a 200e motor in it. I had it out for a ride today, and when I reached down to shift from low to high range, I noticed the engine case was so hot I couldn't hold my hand on it, not ever on the sub-trans. Is it normal for my engine to be this hot? I know i wasn't going very fast, some areas I only hit second gear. I'm running 10w40 oil.

Air cooled motors are designed to run hot. The fins on the jug and head are for cooling, but they need air flow to cool. By you riding the machine slow, or letting it sit and idle will make it become HOT. It needs to be moving to keep cool.

It seemed to be running hot all day, even when I was in 3rd and 4th gear. I know the cylinder and head would get hot, but I didn't think the sub-trans would get so hot I couldn't hold my hand on it. BTW, my cooling fins are clean.

it might need an oil change, changing the oil might help it.

the sub trans will get hot. Its normal for an air cooled motor.
