It looks like its in real good condition. Depending on how well the motor and tranny, and the brakes work. I would give $500 for that and feel pretty good about the deal.

The guy said the motor has been rebuilt and only has 8 hours on it. He also says its an 81 250r.. That doesnt look like my 81. Look like an 81 250r to you guys?

Hmm I dont think ATV/C are street legal here. Not sure though.

I got the money put together. Sent an email today asking when I can check it out. Im going to test compression, look at the plug and make sure it runs through all the gears. Anything else I should check before I buy this? Thanks.

Looks like a nice 1st gen for sure. That's cool he's giving you time to round up the coin. Lots of times money talks and they will sell it right out from under you.

You're stealing that thing @ 500 bucks. That swingarm is super nice, looks to be a Johnnys S&C OR a DG ... either way - rare and nice!

The Fooler also sits VERY nice. It has a really nice stance. Looks to be a well thought out build and probably well maintained. Id run and get it quickly and don't start asking too many questions till it's on the trailer and paid for. lol

If I bought that one I'd leave it pretty much exactly how it sits - aside from maybe a nice aftermarket pipe and a number plate.

Good luck!

I'm not a fan of 1st Gen 250r, but that is clean and looks very good.

Good score.

The down side of this deal was I had to sell my 185s. It was a solid trike :( But it has no suspension. Heres a few pics of it as it was going out the door. I told the guy about the forum. Maybe he will keep me updated.

That is a sweet 81R and it might indeed be an aftermarket pipe. The Kerker I had on my 81 used both factory heat shields.

Yeah, I actually got to thinking that after I posted to be honest - certainly that silencer isn't stock so probably the expansion chamber isn't either. Who knows what other 'goodies' are sitting there?!

He's stealing that thing I tell ya!

Thos rear tires should be a BLAST to whip around on too! Nice seat riding up the tank a little ... really nice Gen1 to say the least.

Howdy,
So I got it home. Its beautiful! Stunning even! I think its jetted way too rich though. So I moved the needle clip up (lower the needle). And took the air screw really far out. Runs much better, but still breaks up at WOT. After I blew up my last 250r running to lean, I'm a bit scared to mess it up. I'm about to head out and buy some new jets. So if its breaking up at WOT and it has improved when I made leaner, the plug still is a bit dark and wet... seem rich too you guys? Just dont want to kill such a nice machine. Thanks. And thanks Damit for the great jetting thread!

Daddio

What size main jet is in it now? I think you should be okay with a 120-125 main out there. 1upfront ran a 118 in his out there. 20/1 mixture

That thing is sweet. Is it original or has it been restored?

Rob

mohadib

Daddio: it has a 162. Only mods I see are a pipe and K&N air filter. The manual says it came with a 158 main jet stock.

rdlsz24: it has been restored.

That is a 158 at sea level. You are over a mile above sea level. Also the factory recommends a little larger jet than what it actually needs to make it run clean.
It's like a rule of thumb. It's a good place to start but not always the best place to leave it. I'll bet that anything over a 130 will be a little on the rich side.

Cool, thanks Daddio! I'll pick up 120,125,130. Will have a report soon. Thanks.

Just because this thing is so nice I called the honda shop, the guy said go down two size :s The honda shop is an hour away so I went to the yamaha shop in town to buy the jets. The guys there also suggested I dont go under 150. So I bought from 150 to 157.5. Ran them all, the smaller I got the better. Bought some more, stopped at 135 and needle on grove 1. It does good through all the ranges. The plug looks good too. I still think I could even go a little smaller. Thanks a lot Daddio!

I'll post a vid of this thing once I buy a helmet :D Until then...

If it is working okay with a 135 don't change it. I know how the temperature changes there from morning to late afternoon. In the morning the 135 will probably work just right but may be a little rich in the afternoon. That would be better than too lean in the morning and just right in the afternoon heat.
Did you check the air cleaner? You will need to make sure that it is clean. A dirty air cleaner will really affect the way that thing runs. You need to get some more detailed pics up.

Thanks Daddio. I'll leave it as is. I cleaned the air filter with the proper K&N cleaning solution and oiled it up. It was pretty spotless before I cleaned it too. Thanks for the help! I'll wash it up this weekend and get some good pics (not with my crappy phone) up :D

Once you get into the project - she would look a LOT better if you ditch the liquid cooled 250R stickers on the tank and look for a nice set of reproduction 1st gen stickers.
