For the stator differences, they are different, stator + flywheel does swap as a set, and the 86 style is the upgrade so would be ideal to keep that....

What's the spark plug look like? This may be a bit late or swinging for the fence, but does it look like the piston has been kissing it?

I'm not for sure, but I believe that the stators and stator wiring are different. I'm no expert. I've just had the same 1985 since 2003.
