86 250R Chain and chain slider

My chain decided to come half way off the front sprocket, chew up the inner edge of the chain, break off the chain slider and worst of all, it broke off the case saver (although the bolt holes for that were already cracked). Wasn't even riding it hard!

Where would be the best place to buy a new chain and chain slider for my 86 250r? Done some searching, but really cant find anywhere.

    Thanks!

That's a great question, does anyone have some input on this?

i have raced motocross for 14+yrs and never ever threw a chain. a few Renthal pieces of junk broke on me , but i never lost a chain....i bet i lost my chain 3 times this year alone....and each time it's that sickening sound, and then the feeling you get waiting to look down and see the damage...

i checked the carrier before like you stated, and there is no play in the swingarm, but I did notice a really tight link, I think what happens to me is twigs or grass will finds its way into the rear sprocket and cause it to jump. There is so much debris on our trails. I never throw it in the snow??
I do run my skidplate always now after having about a 1 inch stick get caught in the sprocket and exploding the chain and carrier. I used to take the skidplate off in the snow because it would get packed in there, no mas' I said !!
Great Ideas glamy, thanks for the advice. I would think with a +6 swingarm that chain would be all over the place.

**** edit *** just checked all the rollers and they are like new, but i did notice my skidplate was bent down in the rear and looked kinda inviting to suck things up into it. I think i just need to be more careful riding the trails because that is when it seems to happen, esp when riding over downed twigs and kicking them up.

Been running ATV's and Motorcycles with chains since 1970 never had one break never had one come off, never had a busted case never felt the need to buy a "case saver"...

I strongly suggest you do a pre ride inspection before each ride, make sure their is no play in the swing arm bearings, make sure their is no play in the rear axle bearings, and most important of all REPLACE the chain and sprockets BEFORE they are worn out.

Resist the urge to go riding with your buddys when you discover a problem, dont put off changing bad parts until "after this ride".

Replace your chain with a quality chain not a cheapo deal you found.

Enjoy a long trouble free life...

Don't buy Renthal chains then!! broke 2 of them within weeks of each other on my YZ400 mx bike , right in the whoops both times. Talk about sucking ass!
    After that RK ONLY !

think i will just replace the entire set, as this chain is not the original honda o-ring and these are the original sprockets on the bike. I will replace them as a set like you are suppossed to do. who knows what the previous owner did.
Just looking for other ideas other than the usual suspects

Weird. I ran a Renthal Supercross in the dunes on my R with a +10" arm and it made it through the week of 2nd gear wide open launches without a hitch. When I put the stock arm back on to take it on the ice I just cut the long chain down and ran it on the ice for the past 8 years and again, never a problem until it finally started getting tight in a few spots this year because the trike was sitting in a damp corner of the shed.

In the 15 years I've owned this machine and the 25 years I've been riding trikes I only tossed a chain on my R once and it was in the dunes with a stock length arm on it. It sounds like there is something out of alignment that is causing the chain to pop off so often.

everything looks straight, it's only happened to me 2 times this year on the R, both times i think it was from debris getting into the rear sprocket. But i will definitly put a new set on.
I think Renthal just had a bad batch that month. never happened to me before, and a few other guys at the track broke thier chains also. Everyone was thinking it was from the torque of the "new" 4 stroke mx bike , could have been??? maybe Renthal made a slightly stronger chain after that??

Mine was from a long time ago, maybe they "don't make them like they used to"? I would get rid of the poor excuse for a skid plate that comes on them from the factory and put a decent aluminum one on. Doing the chain and sprockets as a set is always a good idea. Just remember the rear 1985 sprocket is different than the 1986 although the 86 one will bolt up there will be slop in the bolt holes.

Would these chain and sprocket setups off of Ebay be any good?
