Flying into Phoenix this time, only because it was a last minute decision to make the trip.
It's a little further drive than San Diego, but the tickets were cheaper -- plus the rare non-stop flight from Pittsburgh was a huge plus.
I flew into Yuma in 2011. Flew into San Diego in 2013. It is a nice city.
Last year we flew into Vega$, which is also the plan for next year ...... and the foreseeable future.

I'm considering coming out for this but would need to hook up with someone that is going from one of the nearby airports. Anyone I can hitch a ride with? The flights to Yuma are ridiculous so I would say from Phoenix or San Diego

There are a couple groups of people who drag trailers with trikes for a fee. Some folks who are not on this board but are on Facebook will just drive out truck with their rides. PM keister he may be able to direct you to someone who has space on their trailer.
