Breathing life back into a 1982 Honda ATC 110

So heres the story, The ATC was bought by a dad for his son back in 1982. The son ran the hell out of it and parked it a few years later. The second owner bought it in 2006 and started a rebuild. he got it about 90% and then just used it for the last couple years. I bought it sight unseen, drove 2 hours to go get it and have it home now.

    From the ad:

    At home:

I had to replace the exhaust, clean the carb, and a bunch of minor maintenance. Took it out for a run and all systems work. I tried a deep sand hole and she dug very good in first high.

Now, i have on order a new seat cover to replace this old one, Should be here friday. I bolted on a aftermarket exhaust that when at idle is so quiet i can hear every mechanical part inside turning (love that!!) and i removed the old brake cable and adjusted the brakes so that actually work. My guess is they were never adjusted and are the original pads. My parts list will grow but for now im enjoying tinkering with it and riding it. I will probably next winter do a full frame off restore with motor rebuild. But thats all in time. Thankfuly it fits perfect in the back of my Ranger, and this should take some of the abuse away from it and save me money.

    Thanks guys!

I would have been all over that big wheel, but he wanted $600 for it and it wasnt that pretty. Tonight we loaded the headlight with a H4 bulb and it works good on the trails. Im loving the ATC more and more i use it! I am running Seafoam through the gas system to clean the intake and motor, and just did a fresh oil change with castrol 10W-40 which makes it purr. LOVE this thing!

Ill take some more pictures thursday when she is out again. seat should be here by the end of the week.

to do list isnt big, but front brake, possibly front tire, a bit of paint work, seat and then just odds and ends. I want to hand it down to my kids when i have them.

Last night I tore into the ATC again. It would BOG under quick throttle, and on any load. I adjusted the needle up to allow more fuel and it helped a bit, but I believe its too much. I installed a in line fuel filter, washed the tank and filled it with 91 octane. It was getting better but by 11:15pm, i figured my neighbours were tired of me going up and down the sidewalk haha. Tonight is a thrash session, going to bomb around in it and have some good fun, ill update how it does after. I have ordered this morning a carb kit for it, so lets hope that helps!

When i first got the bike i rinsed the tank and it came out pretty clear. I then added seafoam to a half tank of gas, and ill let the picture tell you how much it actually removed.

Looks like you got a lot of crud out...

If you want to give it another soak and rinse fill it half full with E85. Good ole' corn alcohol, that and some marbles and shaking it a few times a day i got one tank totally shiny inside.

ive been told white vinegar and a week cures a bad tank. Ill try it shortly.

I took it out thursday, she is running OK. Still bogs a bit, but its a lack of fuel thing (gas cap isnt venting) and she is burning/leaking oil so this winter its looking like a complete motor rebuild will happen. Will bore it out and go one up on the rings to 53mm, but i think im going to leave the internals stock. (dont feel like investing money into something that works) I also feel its low on compression, which tells me to rebuild it. By the spring she should be near mint i hope!

Whats the best gasket kit to go with off ebay? Anything i should replace or look into while i have it torn apart? Ill be parts washing everything so it will be pretty spotless when it all goes back together.

All parts have now shipped. Took it up a river last night, did well. Also put my friends truck in neutral and pulled it up to about 40kmh so about mid 3rd gear. was surprised it had the power!

The seat cover and carb kit have arrived. The gasket kit, air cleaner, clutch plates and clutch springs are to be dropped today. I'm going to fix the carb and then it will be on hold for a week or so, i need to get my Saltwater reef tank switched over and in my room by next weekend.

I ordered today a hand brake cable, so i dont have to rely on the foot brake on trails.

    Thanks!

Its a 49CC two stroke pipe. Breaths just great, has a great sound and is quiet enough that i hear the internals of the motor over the exhaust. makes those late night rides happen. It also gave it a bit more torque and a nice pop on each stroke of the motor. I love it and unless it breaks i wont replace it. Its a straight pipe to the muffler. i cut off the old pipe from the muffler and just welded it in. ill take a picture one of these days.

The carb has been rebuilt, the new air filter is on and the new seat cover is on, though it needs a slight adjustment. its looking like a new machine really quick!
