    Picked up an '85 Tecate

Picked this up yesterday for $500. So far as I can tell it needs: Front and rear shock rebuilds, plastics (gahh), swinger bearings, a kick start lever, and a front tire, plus lots of odds and ends. I'll be stripping it to the frame and thouroughly cleaning and media blasting everything. It all looks stock except for a DG silencer and a Keihin carb (dunno what size yet). I won't know what the motor need until I get a kicker. Also, how can you tell if it has a KX cylinder/motor? I thought the tecate motor was black? Also, I thought the '85 had an adjustable dog bone? I dunno, maybe it's an '84 with an '85 brake setup. Anyway, the plan is a riding resto.

The easiest way to check to see if its a Kx cylinder, simply take off the pipe! If there is a bridge going down the center of the exhaust port, it is a kx cylinder. If its open with no bridge, its a kxt cylinder! Depending on certain parts of the frame, it appears that is an 1985. The 85 didnt come with an adjustable link! Both motors came black from the factory!

The frame judging by the reservoir holder is an 85. Footpegs are 85. The shifter is an 85 shifter as well. Looks like a real good snag. I like the chain roller too.. :-) Check your reservoir to see if it has an adjustment knob, the 85 was adjustable the 84 wasn't. We have a group for the 84/85 Tecates too if you haven't already joined.

Cool, the resovoir is adjustable. Yeah, it seems pretty solid, there is a bit of surface rust, but nothing that can't be cleaned up. These things are just so damn hard to come by in my area, I had to grab it. I had an '85 T3 back in the day, but I've missed it since the day I sold it. Gonna head to the garage and start stripping it now. I'm curious about the cylinder. Anyone know if a '91 kx125 kicker will match the splines on the T3 motor? It will just be a temporary solution until I get a new one. I just really wanna comp test/fire this thing up. Oh, and it did come with a rear fender and seat, they were just removed for the pics. The fender is shot though, and I think it's a 2nd gen all hacked up to fit. I'm gonna go join the Tecate group too.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just got done pulling the carb and pipe. It's just a plain old Tecate cylinder lol. I blasted the pipe and it came clean, ready for paint. I also cleaned the carb and everything looks in order. I took a measurement and came up with 36mm. From what I can tell it's a PJ series. Stock was a 34mm Mikuni correct? Next step I'm gonna pull the motor and hit it with fine walnut shells, then I'll pull the head and have a peak inside. If it all looks good, I may ship it to my builder to have it ported, but I haven't decided yet. Any of you guys run a raptor shock with good results, or should I stick with the 300ex shock?
